أناI حرُّfree الفؤادthe heart والجثمانِand the body
غيرexcept أنيthat I مقيَّدٌbound بالزمانِby time
I am free in heart and body,
I am free in heart and body,
yet I am shackled by time.
Yet I am bound by time.
وإلىand for كمhow long أُرىI am shown المنىthe hopes واضحاتclear

How long must I see my hopes clearly before me,
And how long shall I be shown hopes with clear
their paths plain, as I turn my reins toward them?
Paths, as I turn my reins toward them?

Whenever I seek to attain them, there confront me
Then, when I seek to attain them, I am confronted
obstacles hidden from my sight.
By obstacles hidden from my sight.

بزجاجby glass ممكنfirmly secured البنيانthe construction
It is as though, amid the things I see, I were enclosed
So it is as though, amid the sights, I am surrounded
by glass of solid construction.
By glass of solid construction.

And glass may indeed tarnish, so that the two eyes
And the glass may indeed rust, so that

The two eyes see nothing beyond it.
مثلlike أعمىa blind man يبدوappears لهto him الشيءthe thing حلماًin a dream
فيراهso he sees it بمقلةwith the eye اليقظانof one awake
like a blind man to whom something appears in a dream,
Like a blind man to whom a thing appears in a dream,
and he sees it with the eye of one awake;
So he sees it with the eye of one awake.
فإذاthen when هبَّhe awoke عادreturned فيهin him عماهhis blindness
فبكىso he wept حسرةًin anguish منbecause of الحرمانthe deprivation
but when he wakes, his blindness returns,
Then, when he awakens, his blindness returns,
and he weeps in anguish at being denied.
So he weeps in anguish at his deprivation.
