ملك بخلقك والندى المتوالي

وأبيك والجد الكبير العالي

A king through your character and unceasing bounty,

And through your father and your great, exalted grandfather—

أركان مملكة ضمنت خلودها

بالعدل بعد زيادة وكمال

Pillars of a kingdom whose permanence you have assured

Through justice, after growth and perfection.

ما لم تنله بالفتوح بلغته

بجلال أخلاق وطيب خلال

What you did not attain through conquests, you attained

Through nobility of character and goodness of disposition.

ولكل ذي تاج زمان قلَّبٌ

ولك الولاء وصادق الإجلال

For every crowned ruler, time is fickle;

But yours are allegiance and sincere reverence.

بالعيد تحتفل البلاد وإنه

لطليعة الأشباه والأمثال

The country celebrates the festival, and it is

Indeed the forerunner of others like it.

ذكرى جلوسك وهي أَولى مظهر

في الأمتين بزخرف وجمال

The anniversary of your accession, most deserving of display

In both nations, with adornment and beauty.

طافوا بعرشك يعلنون مواثقاً

لك في العصور وسائر الأجيال

They circled your throne, proclaiming pledges

To you through the ages and all generations.

تهدي إليك التهنئات وفودهم

وتعود منك بعزة ونوال

Their delegations bring you congratulations,

And return from you with honor and largesse.

خلت الممالكُ من عروش ملوكها

وملأت في الدنيا المكان الخالي

Kingdoms stand empty of their kings' thrones,

And you have filled the vacant place in the world.

وفداء نفسك كل نفس برة

وبك السلامة من عدى وليال

Every righteous soul would be a ransom for your life,

And through you comes safety from foes and the trials of nights.

ولواؤك المنصور في طياته

تاريخ مصر وآلك الأبطال

Your victorious banner holds within its folds

The history of Egypt and your heroic house.

يتلون فيه كل يوم آيةً

فيجددون به العتاد البالي

Each day they recite a verse from it,

And through it renew their worn-out arms.

تبعت عقائدهم يقينك والْتَقى

إخلاصهم ورضاك حول منال

Their beliefs followed your conviction; together came

Their devotion and your approval around one aim.

إن الذي أعددته لمبشر

للدين والدنيا بخير مآل

What you have prepared is indeed a herald

Of a happy outcome for religion and the world.

وأبر ما تختاره سبباً إلى

مستقبل الوادي صلاح الحال

The most beneficent means you can choose for

The valley's future is to put its affairs right.

ولقد أخذت الأمر فيه بحكمة

قربت بها أمنية المتغالي

You have indeed managed its affairs with wisdom,

Bringing even the overreacher's wish within reach.

إن الذي كرمت وسائله إلى

آماله لأحق بالآمال

One whose means are honorable in pursuing

His hopes is indeed most deserving of their fulfillment.

ولمصر شوراها وندوتها التي

أمن الرجال بها عثار رجال

Egypt has its council and its assembly, where

Men found safety from the missteps of other men.

وقفت لترجع وهي أكبر قوة

فيها وموعدها الصباح التالي

It has paused, to return as the greatest power

Within Egypt, its appointed hour the following morning.

يا واهب البيت الحرام عناية

ردتْ حناناً قسوة الرئبال

O you who bestowed care upon the Sacred House,

Turning the lion's harshness into tenderness,

كنت الشفيع إليه بالصلة التي

عزت على الأعمام والأخوال

You were the intercessor with him, through a gift

Beyond the reach of paternal and maternal uncles.

ومحوت بالحسنى إليه وبالندى

آثار جدِّك من قنا ونصال

With kindness toward him and generosity, you erased

The traces of your grandfather's spears and blades.

في المغرب الأقصى السلام تعده

ولجيرةٍ خلف التخوم وآل

In the Far Maghreb you are preparing peace,

And for neighbors and kin beyond the frontiers.

وارحمتاه لمصر من زعمائها

وتفرُّق الأهواءِ والأميال

Alas for Egypt at the hands of its leaders,

And their divergent desires and inclinations!

يتسابقون إلى مآربهم على

شلو القتيل ودارس الأطلال

They race toward their own ends over

The slain one's torn remains and effaced ruins.

شيعاً وأحزاباً وما جمعتهمُ

محن الزمان وشدة الأهوال

In factions and parties; they have not been united by

The trials of time and the severity of its terrors.

يدعون فيها بالجهاد وإنه

للجاه والألقاب والأموال

There they call for struggle, though it is

For prestige, titles, and wealth.

يتداولون الحكم غير منفذٍ

من كثرة التغيير والإبدال

They take turns in rule, without carrying it through,

Because of so much change and replacement.

لا تطمئن بهم مناصبهم ولا

تجري سياستهم على منوال

Their offices find no stability in them, nor

Does their policy follow a consistent course.

وإذا أخ رضى الوشاية في أخ

فهو الأحق بطعنة العذال

If a brother accepts slander against a brother,

He most deserves the reproachers' thrust.

أيكون كل فتى لآخر هادماً

ويريد نجوته من الزلزال

Can every man destroy another,

And still seek his own escape from the earthquake?

ويرد عاديةً ويدفع غارة

واهي العتاد ممزق الأوصال

And repel an assault and fend off a raid,

His equipment feeble, his limbs torn apart?

حرية يرجون أم رُجعَى إلى

ثقل القيود وشدة الأغلال

Do they hope for freedom, or a return to

The weight of fetters and the tightness of shackles?

يا صاحبَ الوادي وجامع شمله

ومؤلف الأضداد والأشكال

O master of the valley, uniter of its scattered people,

And reconciler of opposites and counterparts,

عالجت أدواء الزمان ولم تضق

بعلاج داء في النفوس عضال

You have treated the ailments of the age and have not shrunk

From treating an intractable disease within men's souls.

ورأيت أفضل من بصيرة سائر

بالسيئات عماية الجهال

You deemed better than the insight of one walking

In evil deeds the blindness of the ignorant.

ما للحمى وبنيه إلا ما ترى

من حيلة ووسيلة ومجال

The homeland and its sons have only what you discern

Of resourcefulness, means, and scope.

أنفذ مشيئتك المطاعة فيهمُ

عف العزيمة والقوى والبال

Carry out among them your will, which they obey,

Pure in resolve, in strength, and in mind.

وارجع إلى ميزان جدّك موفياً

في حكم مصر وذلك المكيال

Return to your grandfather's scales, giving full measure

In ruling Egypt, and to that measure of his.

أخذ الحكومة مستقلاً عادلاً

بر السريرة طاهر الأذيال

He assumed government, independent and just,

Upright of heart, his garments' hems unstained.

رفعتْ إلى النجم البلادَ يمينُهُ

وتصرف المقدار في الآجال

His right hand raised the country to the stars,

And fate held sway over allotted lifetimes.

إن الذي فرض الثواب مضاعفاً

فرض العقاب الحر غير مبال

He who ordained a doubled reward

Imposed punishment as a free man, undeterred.

لولا البصيرة لم يهن صعب ولم

تفتح مواضٍ معقلاً وعوال

Without insight, no difficulty would yield, nor would

Keen swords and tall spears conquer a stronghold.

بالرأي تدفع مصر هوج عواصفٍ

من حولها وتشق شم جبال

With judgment Egypt repels raging storms

All around her and cleaves towering mountains.

وقع القصاص على الجناة فهي شفى

غلَّ الغريم الغاصب المتعالي

Retribution fell upon the offenders, thereby soothing

The rancor of the arrogant, usurping adversary.

وهل اكتفى بدماء أمسٍ أم رأى

أخذ البلاد بتهمة الأطفال

Was he content with yesterday's blood, or did he contemplate

Punishing the country on the charge against children?

بغيٌ عليها إن أصرَّ ومنكر

أن يستعيد سياسة الإذلال

If he persists, it is aggression against her, and an outrage

To revive the policy of humiliation.

ماذا يريد القادم الآتي غداً

بعد المدل ببأسه المختال

What does the newcomer arriving tomorrow want,

After the arrogant man who vaunted his might?

تتساءل اليوم البلاد أراغب

في هدنة أو منذر بقتال

Today the country asks: does he seek

A truce, or does he threaten war?

إني أخاف بقاءه من بعد ما

رضى الجلاء وهم للترحال

I fear he may stay, even after he

Agreed to withdrawal and intended to depart.

أوزارة الأحرار نرجو بعد ما

أبت الوفاق وزارة العمال

Shall we hope for a Liberal ministry, after

The Labour ministry refused agreement?

واللّه يعلم أن قلبك للحمى

جمُّ الشجون مضاعف الأشغال

God knows that your heart, for the homeland,

Is full of sorrows and doubly burdened with cares.

لولا سياستك الرشيدة لم تضع

دعوى الغريم وفرصة المحتال

Without your prudent policy, there would not have vanished

The adversary's claim and the schemer's chance.

نِعم الرجال على البلاد كثيرة

وأجلها للقائل الفعال

Men's favors to the country are many,

And the greatest belong to the speaker who acts.

أقسمتُ بالوادي وطيب هوائه

وبنيله المتدفق السلسال

I swore by the valley and the sweetness of its air,

And by its surging, sweet-flowing Nile,

إني الوفيُّ بعهد مصر وما أنا

للعهد بالناسي ولا بالسالي

That I am faithful to my pledge to Egypt; I am neither

Forgetful of that pledge nor unmindful of it.

ومهنِّئُ الوطن المقدس وهو في

حريةٍ ترضيهِ واستقلال

And I congratulate the sacred homeland, now living in

Freedom that pleases it and independence.
