Your trials, O House of Osman, are many,

Yet you are stronger than they, and better able to overcome them.

Is an exhausted state to be prey

To four treacherous powers that act like tigers?

Gathered around all you must defend, rushing

Toward their doom—if only they would take heed!

My heart is divided between love for you—which prevails—

And a hatred for your enemies that blazes.

And if I had might to match my zeal,

You would have fortresses and an army from it.

I freely offer my life, but its path

To you is barred, though love would have it otherwise.

Must my blood flow in vain where grief is stirred,

When your battlefield is more entitled to it, more deserving?

I remain, with my fetters tight upon me,

And I have nothing but tears streaming down.

When will the free, unbowed man find his place

In power, carrying out decisions by his own choice?

Surely the time has come for tyrants to be repaid for what they have wrought,

And the time has come for the people of the East to reflect.
