يقولونthey say ماتdied الشاعرانthe two poets ولمyet did not تَنُحْyou lament
وقدthough indeed ناحlamented أهلthe people of المشرقينthe two Easts عليهماover them both
They say, “The two poets have died, yet you have not lamented,
They say the two poets died, yet grief did not depart,
though the people of the two Easts have lamented them both.”
And the people of the two horizons mourned for them.
ولمand did not يدعنيinvite me الجمعانthe two assemblies فيat موعديهماtheir two appointed times
وإنيand indeed I لأغنىsurely least in need الصحبthe companions عنof دعوتيهماtheir two invitations
The two assemblies did not invite me at their appointed times,
The two assemblies did not let me attend their place,
yet I, of all the companions, least need their two invitations.
Though I am the richest of friends without their invitation.
لئنthough indeed فارقdeparted الدنياthis world الصديقانthe two friends بغتةًsuddenly
فقدthen indeed أخذاthey both took منof خيرهاits bounty حصَّتيهماtheir two shares
Though the two friends departed this world suddenly,
If the two friends left the world suddenly,
they had indeed taken their shares of its bounty.
They took from its goodness their share.
وأغناهماand enriched them both ماwhat استودعاthey both entrusted قيضتيهماtheir two hands (probably قبضتيهما)
وأغلاهماand made them both precious ماwhat استودعاthey both entrusted مهجتيهماtheir two hearts
What they had entrusted to their hands had enriched them,
What they entrusted as their fate enriched them
and what they had entrusted to their hearts had made them precious.
And what they entrusted as their passion made them precious.
ونالاand they both attained منof الإجلالreverence فيat مأتميهماtheir two funerals
مداهits utmost extent كماjust as نالاهthey both attained it فيat موسميهماtheir two festivals
And at their two funerals they received reverence
They attained from honor in their funeral
in its fullest measure, as they had at their two festivals.
Its extent as they attained it in their heyday.
ليَI have الدمعtears أستشفيI seek healing بهthrough it فيin نواهماtheir absence
إذاwhen أبطأتare slow بيwith me حاملاتيmy bearers إليهماto them both
I have tears, through which I seek healing in their absence,
I have tears that I seek to heal their pain with
when my bearers are slow to bring me to them.
When those who carry me to them are late.
وكانand it was بوديmy wish لوthat تقدمhad come first مصرعيmy death
فلاso not أشهدI witness الندينthe two peers فيat مصرعيهماtheir two deaths
I wished that my own death had come first,
I wish my death had preceded
so I would not witness the two peers at their deaths.
So I would not witness the death of the two friends.
وفيتI kept faith بعهدwith the pledge to الحيthe living والميتand the dead واستوتand became equal
أماميbefore me همومthe sorrows of الجانبينthe two sides كليهماboth of them
I have kept faith with the living and the dead; equal
I fulfilled the pact of the living and the dead, and worries
before me are the sorrows of both sides alike.
Of the two sides became equal before me.
