جميل الصوت وافتنَّ افتتانا

The region summoned its poet, and he answered,

Sweet of voice, displaying his art in rapture.

سيعرفني بنوه بعد جهل

وأذكر حامداً ذا المهرجانا

Its sons will know me, having known me not,

And I shall remember this festival with gratitude.

وتبقى فيك أشعاري رحيقاً

وتبقى فيك أشعاري رحيقاً

كما تبقى مآثرك الزمانا

كما تبقى مآثرك الزمانا

And in you my poems will remain as nectar,

As your noble deeds endure throughout time.

وإن لك الحسامَ به تحامى

وإن لك الحسامَ به تحامى

عن الوادي وإن ليَ اللسانا

عن الوادي وإن ليَ اللسانا

And yours is the sword with which you defend

The valley, and mine is the tongue.

أذكِّرُ بالفضيلة من تلاهى

أذكِّرُ بالفضيلة من تلاهى

وأُعْجِلُ بالنصيحة من توانى

وأُعْجِلُ بالنصيحة من توانى

I remind those lost in diversion of virtue,

And with counsel I spur on those who lag.

ستجعل أهل مصر وملحقيها

ستجعل أهل مصر وملحقيها

ملائكة وتجعلها جنانا

ملائكة وتجعلها جنانا

You will make the people of Egypt and her dependencies

Angels, and turn her into gardens of paradise.
