Over what matter does discord return among you,

When peace has journeyed with you for only a night?

And evening departs with whispered counsel and contentment,

And morning rises with rancor and anger.

Do you return to a wound of yours and widen it,

So it may preoccupy you after the wound has healed?

And where are the covenants you brought,

If they contain neither forbearance nor pardon?

And has the valley learned what you are doing,

And what of it the tyrant confirms, and what he erases?

And neither the caravan nor its course was entrusted to him,

Nor were withholding and granting left to him.

And nothing wards off a foe but your unity,

If you lack sword and spear in fighting him.

And everyone loyal to the homeland and its people

Is generous and openhanded with his eyes and his lifeblood.

Stop dividing the spoils before they are won,

For no multiplication, addition, or subtraction has proved sound here.

Each faction has its view and its reckoning,

And my lot among you is agonizing toil and labor.

And if my admonition and counsel do you no good,

Then the admonition and counsel of events will suffice you.
