يا دولة تدعو الدفاعَ غدرا

O state that calls defense treachery,

O state, you call for treacherous defense

yet surpasses all treacherous states in the reach of its evil!

While you are the most treacherous of them all

هل نسيت سينوبُ حربَ القِرْمِ

Have you forgotten Sinop in the Crimean War,

Have you forgotten the defeat at Crimea

and how fiercely you bombarded the fleet,

When the fleet stoned you with pitiless stoning

وهو لدى مرساه والبَحَّارَهْ

وهو لدى مرساه والبَحَّارَهْ

عليه لا ينتظرون غارَهْ

عليه لا ينتظرون غارَهْ

while it lay at anchor, with the sailors

While it was anchored, with its sailors

aboard it expecting no raid?

Who did not await an attack upon it

وهل نسيتِ نكبة الهنودِ

وأخذك الأرمن في القيودِ

وأخذك الأرمن في القيودِ

And have you forgotten the calamity of the Indians,

And have you forgotten the defeat by the Indians

and your taking the Armenians away in chains?

And the Armenians taking you captive in shackles

قد كان لي في ذا المجال مصرخُ

قد كان لي في ذا المجال مصرخُ

لو دمتُ حرةً ودام البرزخُ

لو دمتُ حرةً ودام البرزخُ

I could have raised a cry in this arena,

I would have cried out about this

had I remained free and the isthmus endured,

Had I remained free and the interim continued

وما التقى الأبيض والأحمر في

ما كان سداً دون كل معتف

ما كان سداً دون كل معتف

and had the White and Red Seas not met in

And the white and the red never met

what had been a barrier against every intruder

To be a barrier against any transgressor

وكان مسلكي إلى الشآمِ

وكان مسلكي إلى الشآمِ

وغيرها من مدن الإمامِ

وغيرها من مدن الإمامِ

and had been my road to Syria

My path used to be towards Syria

and to the Imam's other cities.

And other cities of the Imam

يا دولة القيصر أجفوك على

يا دولة القيصر أجفوك على

أني أخاف اليوم منك بدلا

أني أخاف اليوم منك بدلا

O state of the Tsar, I shun you, although

O state of the Tsar, I blame you

today I fear another in your place.

That today, instead, I fear you

إن شغلتك همة اليابانِ

عن حقك المزعوم في البلقانِ

عن حقك المزعوم في البلقانِ

If Japan's resolve has distracted you

If your ambition for Japan

from your alleged right in the Balkans,

وقام عنك الإنكليز فيهِ

مقام ذي تكبُّرٍ وتيهِ

and the English have taken your place there,

And the British rise there

with the bearing of the arrogant and conceited,

With arrogance and confusion

جاءوا وصاحوا صيحة الأنانيهْ

مصر أو البقاء في مقدونيهْ

they came and shouted their selfish cry:

وكمَّلوا من أمرهم ما نقصا

And they took possession of Egypt as they had of Cyprus,

And they possessed Egypt like possessing Cyprus

and completed what was lacking in their enterprise.
