O people of Marrakesh, with my soul trembling,

indeed, the one who warned of the consequences of your ignorance spoke true.

After your deposed Abd al-Aziz, do we see

Abd al-Hafiz restless upon his throne?

He flees from you into a despoiler’s shackles

when, in anger, you flee to your brothers.

If you fault him, you have faulted his brother; and if

he steals, his brother stole before him.

If he ruled unjustly, would not your endurance

of him have been easier than splitting into factions?

You have come to ruin as he did; so take your full share

of the fate that had already come to pass in Egypt.

    إذا تذكرها ذو غيرة صعقا

    You have reminded her of divisive passions;

when a man of zeal recalls them, he falls senseless.

You were the rear of a caravan led by a band

of blind men; when its appointed hour came, it caught up.

So, O you who call to account the two partners who, against

the captives of your promises in Marrakesh, made common cause—

I am indeed suspicious of this silence; do you

seek an advantage like the one they both gained?

O you, so skilled at deceiving people, they

have come to see you as skilled at forsaking them.

    وهل ينجِّيهمُ عرفانيَ الطرقا

    I have indeed long known these ways;

and can my knowledge of these ways save them?

My prisons have grown so narrow that I cannot

move my hand or bend my neck.

Were it not for longing for the Bosphorus, there would be no

escape from the body for my soul this morning.

So would that, after despairing of its angels,

I might drown in its twin depths before reaching them.
