حر الضمير وأن تروني ناثرا
O my people, it was decreed that you should see me a poet,
O people, it was destined that you see me a poet
Free in conscience, and see me a writer of prose;
Free in conscience, and that you see me a prose writer

وأسركم عند الهداية شاكراً

وأَسُوؤُكُمْ عند الغواية زاجرا
And I gladden you with thanks when you follow guidance,
And your secret keeper when guided, grateful
And displease you with rebukes when you go astray.
And your worst when misguided, warning

لو لم أعش فيكم غريباً حائرا
Yes, poetry is a craft through which I would rise,
Yes, poetry is a noble craft I aspired to
Were I not living among you, a bewildered stranger.
Had I not lived among you a bewildered stranger

My reward from you is your understanding of what I make heard
I judge you while my mind is aware
Among you, when the striver awaits someone to reward him.
Of you, when the fighter awaits reward

I do indeed ask Egypt, wealthy as she is,
I ask Egypt, though rich
For some of what the gardens give the bird.
For some of what green fields give the bird

بالريش عن أسر الرياض مهاجرا
And the free man is one who accepts wandering and is content
And free is he who accepts roaming and sufficed
With his feathers rather than captivity in the gardens, as he migrates.
With feathers instead of shackles migrating
