O House of Osman, we do not know: should we apologize

For neglecting the festival, or hasten to reproach?

Our excuses are a plague that clings to us,

And cholera that subsides awhile, then spreads.

And fire blazes, the Nile's failing whetting its appetite

For everything: it leaves nothing and spares nothing.

And in reproach lies comfort for the soul; we would not

Have reproached you but for grief and distress.

Whenever we complained of our conqueror's oppression,

You called us liars and claimed it was ungrateful arrogance.

Today we complain of neither rule nor ruler,

Nor seek your shelter from what fate has brought.

Nor do we charge you to wage war on nature, for

Against it neither your white swords nor tawny spears avail.

Nor have we asked you for money to give us

Aid, for we have no need of one who is poor.

But we hope for some kindness from you,

To console us as we patiently endure these horrors.

The sons of China wept in anguish at news of us,

Yet no report of our plight has stirred you.

    وآن أن تصفحوا عنا وتغتفروا

    O people, your mercy toward us has become a duty;

The time has come to pardon us and forgive.

If our past wrongdoing displeased you, we have

In what has befallen us a deterrent from sin.

Why not recall some kindness, some noble deed of ours,

If remembrance leaves any mark upon your minds?

How often we openly proclaimed our love for you,

Despite those who proclaimed their bitter hatred of you,

And warned us; yet we increased our support for you

Until you were satisfied; their warnings availed them nothing.

While all who had ties to you had disowned you

And spent the night hiding in terror.

We plunged through two dust-clouds, of pitch-black night and

Blood, and trod the tall spears as they clashed.

Nor do we hold our favors over you or reproach you

With our hands' great deeds, or boast.

    والأسد أنتم ونحن الناب والظفر

    For the bow is yours; the arrow and bowstring are ours;

You are the lion, and we the fang and claw.

A festival, yet none of what was familiar has returned in it

To Egypt's sons, save the anguish they feared.

If you danced for it in pride, they too have danced

In agony, drunk from the cup of sorrow.

And if you lit the lamps of your celebration,

A blaze of rage burns in their hearts.

And if you stayed awake, letting your eyes roam over

The fairest sights, they have lain awake in fear.

And if the ringing of lutes kept you company by night,

Wailing women are the people's music and evening talk.

O House of Osman, the world is turning away

From us and you, if lessons prove of no avail.

And if you persist in estrangement, your ranks

And ours will be scattered fragments among our foes.

Visit a land stricken in its resolve,

Its wealth and its sons, for it lies dying.

So the poets of the Nile have not held their festival,

Nor have titles and money-purses stirred them.

    فاليوم تنثر من أجفاني الدرر

    My mouth once strung pearls of congratulation;

Today pearls scatter from my eyelids.

I used to sing, light of heart, as

I visited the garden smiling, at evening and at dawn.

    So the garden of letters has become bare;

How can I sing, with neither blossom nor fruit?

Indeed, though I am angered, I acknowledge

That if you aided Egypt, she would triumph.

And though your past has been changed by your present,

Yet no wavering will dwell within my faithful heart.

I wasted my early days in vain, and now

My later days reproach me over you.

But I was raised among a people enthralled

By love for you, and born to obey you.

They forgot your festival only because they

Are in a calamity in which their thoughts have failed them.

How often we rejoiced for you when you won a victory,

Yet you felt no anguish for us when harm befell us.

Do you reward those who love you by forsaking them?

A fine kindness indeed—but how ill they are rewarded!

For their sole aim is what pleases you,

While your sole desire is what they reject.

O Lord, You are our help; be gentle with hearts

That almost break from the intensity of pain.

And have mercy on breasts that distress almost crushes,

As though their breaths were sparks from their own heat.

    صرنا بأمرك بعد الغي نأتمر

    And lift Your punishment from us: we are human;

After straying, we now heed Your command.

And accept our repentance: indeed, for Your pardon and

Forgiveness, kindness and favor we wait.
