My champion against the world is a generous man I called upon;
My excuse from this life is a generous friend I called upon
So he answered my call and fulfilled my hope.
He answered my prayers and granted my hopes
فإنfor if يولنيhe grants me المعروفkindness كانis هناؤهhis delight
بإسدائيin bestowing on me المعروفkindness مثلequal to هنائيmy delight
For if he grants me kindness, his delight
If he continues to bestow favors on me, his joy
In bestowing kindness on me equals my own.
In granting me favors will equal my joy in receiving them
وإنand if أثنI praise كيso that أقضيI repay ديونthe debts جميلهhis kindness
عَليَّupon me رأىhe regards ديناًa debt عليهupon him ثنائيmy praise
And if I praise him to repay the debts his kindness lays
And if he refuses so I may repay his many kind deeds
Upon me, he counts my praise a debt upon himself.
He will see it as a debt upon me, for which I praise him
فَعَنِّيso, on my behalf لهfor him منfrom نفسهhimself طالmay it be long عمرهhis life
علىfor خيرهhis goodness الجاريever-flowing أتمthe fullest جزاءrecompense
So he receives from himself, on my behalf—long may he live—
So for his sake, whose long life continues in goodness
The fullest recompense for his ever-flowing goodness.
The finest reward for his ongoing charity is to release me from obligation
