Is this the homeland's and people's loss of you, or a war
The fever-stricken, yet the people in you, or is it the war,
in which the homeland and people endure hardships?
Suffers from fever, in it the calamities and the people,

The terror is not from enemies' fire and steel,
And it is not the terror of the enemy's fire and steel,
but from the horror of losing you—a war in itself.
But it is from the awfulness of how the war separated you.

I received reassuring news of your recovery;
I received the news of recovery comfortingly,
but before evening, bitter tidings had arrived.
I had barely touched until the difficult news came.

I wailed, the birds around me wailed, and beneath me heaved
So I wailed and the birds wailed around me and stirred in me
the ground; the water ebbed, and the grass burst into flame.
My place, and the water raged and the grass caught fire.

And the truest mourner in calamity is one who weeps
And I believe your weeping in afflictions more than one who wept
over a towering figure falling and a radiant light fading.
Over a towering falling and a clinging fading away.

You sought a goal, earnestly crouching and leaping;
I sought seriously the bounding and leaping an utmost goal,
when all was over, crouching and leaping were alike.
But when the matter ended the bounding and leaping became equal.

Your work and wasting illness fought over your two sides:
And your side competed with your occupation and care,
this had one side, and that had the other.
So this one has a side and that one has a side.

You endured the strain of their pushing and pulling,
And I suffered the effort of pushing and pulling between them,
and rested only when pushing and pulling ceased.
You did not rest until the pushing and the pulling ended.

You departed, a martyr to illness, after battles
You went as a martyr of the malady after long
long, with neither lance-thrusts nor blows.
Wars without stabbing or striking in them.

While you are behind your infatuated people.

Empty of you is the house of glory, the Nile and dew,

And the caller to loftiness - did the East and West empty?

how often the spacious world was too narrow for your hopes!
And how narrow the ample world became for your hopes!

and clouds have greeted it at dawn with their earliest showers—
I greeted it from its early clouds.

And the Lord honored his status in the life.

Dust would not have taken your pure body.

As though I were the departing travelers' camel-driver: past me passes
It is as if I - reprimanding the dissenters - am passed by
one company, never to return, and another company leaves me.
An irredeemable caravan that leaves me caravan.

but my bereavement and affliction in losing you have not grown light.
And the calamity and worries did not diminish to me in you.

they passed, but my sorrows and anguish remained unchanged.
So it passed while my sorrows are still and the anguish.

For my eyes are as I pledged to you and the heart.
