    In my village there was a mad youth.

    The sorrowful laughed at his antics.

    He was like a monkey when he grew merry,

    And a wild hare when he leapt.

    So some people thought him a saint and guide,

    Who uncovered the unseen and brought the distant near,

    And knew the present and the future.

    So they made him their authority and refuge.

    حتى دعوا من يلدون باسمه

    Nor was obeying his judgment enough for them;

    They even named their children after him.

    Each of them, if he made a vow, would give him

    All he had acquired and saved.

    And illness struck a camel of theirs,

    So they hurried and ran to the youth.

    So they brought him, hoping he would save it

    Through his secret power, his spirit, and blessing.

    So he circled the camel, then cried:

    "Bring it the butcher and the weapon!"

    So they beat him soundly with sticks,

    And filled him with sorrow and anguish.

    فكيف بالمخبول والمعتوه

    Advice is not accepted from the discerning;

    So what of the deranged and the feeble-minded?

    فكيف بالجاهل حين أنذرا

    And a man of reason may be humiliated if he admonishes;

    So what of the ignorant man when he warns?

    And this is my view: whoever clings

    To the likes of this fool is a fool himself.
