1. كتبت إليكم ما استحق مقامكم

    ولم أر منكم ما استحق مقامي

    I wrote to you what your standing deserved,

    yet saw from you nothing worthy of mine.

  2. وأرسلت قلبي في كلامي فلم أجد

    مكاناً لقلبي عندكم وكلامي

    And I sent my heart within my words, but found no

    place with you for my heart or my words.

  3. وحسبيَ من رد السلام قبوله

    فيا ليت شعري هل قبلتَ سلامي

    And accepting my greeting is reply enough for me;

    ah, if only I knew: have you accepted my greeting?

  4. وإني لأسترعي الزمان ذمامكم

    ولستَ بمسترعي الزمان ذمامي

    And I charge Time to keep faith with you,

    yet you do not charge Time to keep faith with me.

  5. أفضلاً رأيتم أم فضولاً مودتي

    وما هي إلا شيمتي وغرامي

    Did you deem my affection a kindness or an impertinence?

    And it is nothing but my nature and my passion.

  6. وإني على ما فاتني غير نادم

    ولو كان فيه رتبتي ووسامي

    And I do not regret what has passed me by,

    even if it held my rank and my medal.

  7. أعاتبكم عتب الرضى وألومكم

    لعل عتابي نافع وملامي

    I chide you with goodwill, and reproach you,

    perhaps my chiding and my reproach will do some good.

  8. وقد كنت أرجو أن أكون أمامكم

    كما أنتم ملء العيون أمامي

    And I had hoped to stand before you,

    as you stand before me, filling my eyes.
