ما زلت في حزن لفقد محمدٍ

ما زلت في حزن لفقد محمدٍ

إذ كان بكرَ أبي وأولَ إخوتي

إذ كان بكرَ أبي وأولَ إخوتي

I still grieve for the loss of Muhammad,

I'm still in sorrow for the loss of Muhammad

For he was my father's firstborn and the first of my brothers,

He was the first son of my father and eldest of my brothers

متمنياً لو أنني أدركته

متمنياً لو أنني أدركته

وظفرت منه بصحبة ومودة

وظفرت منه بصحبة ومودة

Wishing I had lived to know him

Wishing I had known him

And won his companionship and affection,

And gained his company and affection

حتى أتى هذا الأخير سميُّهُ

حتى أتى هذا الأخير سميُّهُ

وشبيهه في حسنه والصحة

وشبيهه في حسنه والصحة

Until this youngest came, his namesake,

Until this last one came, named after him

And his likeness in beauty and health.

And resembling him in beauty and health

فنسيت أولهم بآخرهم وأك

فنسيت أولهم بآخرهم وأك

بَرَهُم بأصغرهم وزالت لوعتي

بَرَهُم بأصغرهم وزالت لوعتي

So I forgot their first through their last, and their el-

So I forgot the first with the last and was

-dest through their youngest, and my anguish faded.

Content with the youngest and my grief subsided

حتى إذا استحييت آمالي به

حتى إذا استحييت آمالي به

ورد الردى فمضى سريع اللفتة

Until, when I had revived my hopes through him,

Until when my hopes were revived through him

He met death and was gone in a swift turn.

Fate returned and he left abruptly

شبه أراد تمامَهُ فأتمَّهُ

شبه أراد تمامَهُ فأتمَّهُ

في عمره ومماته والعلة

في عمره ومماته والعلة

A likeness he wished to perfect, and perfected,

Resembling the one whose perfection he sought to attain

In his lifespan, his death, and his illness.

In his life, his death, and his affliction
