أجلِّ أطباء الزمان نظيفُ

I have known the physicians of the age; among

I got to know the physicians of the time, so of

the most eminent physicians of the age was Nazif.

The finest physicians of the time was Nathif.

محيط بأكفاء الرجال منيف

The minister's judgment chose him, and he is

The vizier chose him, for he

well acquainted with capable men and eminent in standing.

Was well-versed with the capable men, highbred.

تولى جديد الأمر وهو لمثله

تولى جديد الأمر وهو لمثله

وأكبر منه في البلاد حصيف

وأكبر منه في البلاد حصيف

He has assumed a new charge, and for its like

He took on the new role, and he for such roles,

and greater in the land, he has sound judgment.

And even greater in the land, is adequate.

أمانة فن يا نظيف شريفة

أمانة فن يا نظيف شريفة

لقومك ترعاها وأنت شريف

لقومك ترعاها وأنت شريف

A noble trust of your art, O Nazif,

Of science, O Nathif, an honest profession

you safeguard for your people, noble as you are.

For your people you care for, and you are wellbred.

بنو علمك العالي لديك تجمعوا

بنو علمك العالي لديك تجمعوا

وهم في نواحي الملك منك ألوف

وهم في نواحي الملك منك ألوف

The sons of your lofty science have gathered about you;

Your lofty knowledge, you have it gathered,

and throughout the realm, they are yours in their thousands.

And they in the king’s domains under you are thousands.

يحيُّون فيك الفضل وهو مقدس

يحيُّون فيك الفضل وهو مقدس

ويرعون فيك الود وهو لطيف

ويرعون فيك الود وهو لطيف

They salute the excellence in you, which is sacred,

They praise you for your merit which is sacred,

and cherish the affection in you, which is tender.

And they cherish your affection which is gentle.

وقد نلت بالأخلاق ما لا يناله

وقد نلت بالأخلاق ما لا يناله

من الحكم جبار المراس عنيف

من الحكم جبار المراس عنيف

And through good character you have gained what no

And you have attained with ethics what cannot be attained

violent, unyielding tyrant can gain through power.

By the despot of the lance who is violent.

تعالج بالطب السقام وتارة

تعالج بالطب السقام وتارة

تعالج بالمعروف وهو صنوف

تعالج بالمعروف وهو صنوف

You treat illness with medicine, and at times

You treat illness with medicine, and sometimes

you treat it with kindness in its many forms.

You treat with kindness which has diverse ways.

ستملأ أبناء المدينة صحة

ستملأ أبناء المدينة صحة

وأنت بها ملْءَ العيون تطوف

وأنت بها ملْءَ العيون تطوف

You will fill the city's sons with health,

The town’s children you will fill with health,

while you go about it, a sight to fill the eyes.

And you among it are, eyes brimming, roving about.

فلا ينقضي يومان إلا وَجوّها

فلا ينقضي يومان إلا وَجوّها

لكل مقيم مربع ومصيف

لكل مقيم مربع ومصيف

Scarcely two days will pass before its air

So two days do not pass without its façades

is a spring retreat and summer haven for every resident.

For each resident furnished and breezy.

ولا تغتدي إلا ومن كل أمة

ولا تغتدي إلا ومن كل أمة

بها نُزُلٌ يهوونها وضيوف

بها نُزُلٌ يهوونها وضيوف

Nor will it greet the morning without, from every nation,

And you do not have a meal unless from every nation

lodgers who love it, and guests within it.

In it lodgers who adore it and are guests.

وأنك واقيها إذا الحرب دمدمت

وأنك واقيها إذا الحرب دمدمت

ودارت خطوب حولها وصروف

ودارت خطوب حولها وصروف

And you are its protector when war thunders

And that you protect it when war rumbles,

and calamities and turns of fate circle around it.

And crises revolve around it with changes.
