منكمfrom you سؤالinquiry ولاnor ليof me بينكمamong you خبرُnews
I fell silent, my people, for a month and vanished, yet no
Silent, my people, for a month, concealed was I,
inquiry came from you, nor was there any word of me among you.
No question from you, no news to me thereby.

ليليmy night أسىًsorrow ونهاريand my day كلهall of it ضجرُtedium
My illness has left me in a world apart from yours;
I strayed beyond your world, my grief and gloom grew,
My night is sorrow, and my day is all tedium.
My nights were restless, and my days, ennui.
وبتand I spent the night فيin معزلseclusion منكمfrom you وأينand where أناI
منfrom المتوجthe crowned one أرجوهI appeal to him وأعتذرand I offer my apologies
And I spent the night apart from you—and how far I am
Apart from you I dwelt, from crowns afar,
from the crowned one, to whom I appeal and offer my apologies.
Seeking, though hope was dead, excuse to try.

فيلتويyet it buckles تحتهbeneath it عزْميmy resolve وينكسرand breaks
I wish to bear my share of his trust,
I’d bear my share of trust its weight would break
Yet beneath it my resolve buckles and breaks.
My will, and shatter my tenacity.

فيat المهرجاناتthe festivals ليfor me سمعhearing ولاnor بصرsight
The land surges with festivals, yet
The lands were filled with celebrations, but
I have neither hearing nor sight at the festivals.
No sight nor sound of joy for me thereby.

Had I command of my hand and mouth on his day,
And if my hands could seize the chance, my words
He would have had from me gleaming ornaments and resplendent verses.
Would be sincere advice and gems thereby.
وماand not أقولI say وفيwhile in برئيmy recovery غداًtomorrow أملٌhope
حسبيenough for me منof العمرlife ذكرىthe memory of أمسyesterday والأثرand the legacy
Nor do I say, while there is hope of my recovery tomorrow,
No more I say, though in my soul tomorrow
“Yesterday’s memory and its legacy are enough of life for me.”
Are memories of yesterday that try.
وقدand indeed صبرتI endured patiently علىunder البلوىaffliction إلىuntil أجلa set time
ولستand I do not أعلمknow ماwhat يأتيcomes بهwith it القدرfate
And I have patiently borne affliction for a time,
I’ve borne afflictions to their destined end,
And I do not know what fate will bring.
Unsure what fate’s surprises yet apply.
