I brought you my letter in my right hand.

What I seek is for you, not for my family or for me.

In it I ask you for a cure for what ails you,

which has already taken its toll on you—not a cure for what ails me.

You begrudge even an answer, though you

owe the world to me and to my wealth.

This war among you has kept you preoccupied,

over prestige at one time, and advantage at another.

Should ingratitude anger me, when it is the least of what

the nights have wrought, if I count the nights?

I withhold my reproach out of self-restraint and dignity,

and where is one with whom my reproach would avail?

And on what day did he ever go bearing a request

to anyone—he who gave his soul in sacrifice?

And my life is only this: that fruit be borne by what

I planted of kindness, well-watered and growing.

I would have my misfortune be another's consolation,

not find my consolation in another's misfortune.

And if everyone in distress took comfort in what

I have endured, I would find no complainer among people.

I see the people—all the people—within the bounds of

my place, and the whole valley as my place.

And I send whispered confidences to every beating heart:

let them change what they will; my state remains as it is.

No land has grown barren, nor its breadth grown narrow

for a people who possess one of my qualities.

I called, and their suspicions carried the slanderers away,

and they put their interpretation on that longing and those hopes.

They said, 'A stranger to the house seeks entry,'

yet the house is only a part of my building.

I seek from my times no contentment for my hand,

but I hope for contentment for my heart.

And what has one whose stomach cannot digest water

to do with proffered wealth, which he meets empty-bellied?

What I desired lies above what they imagined; and would

I say of what I possess, 'If only this were mine'?

It is not my own due from an adversary that I seek,

but the unity of those who work is my aim.

The people's men are equal in my eyes; enough for them

is my impartial judgment among the reformers.

    فلا ساقت الأقدار تلك الدواهيا

    And in the air are omens of what I fear;

may fate never bring those calamities!

Nor may my nation see, in peace or war,

in any quarter, anyone but a loyal ally.
