صحاباًcompanions منfrom الأحزانsorrows بعدهمُafter them مرضىsick
Companions called to one another to depart, and left
The companions called for departure and left,
companions sick with grief in their wake.
Companions sick with sorrows after them.

وماand not ألفواthey found فيهاin them مهاداًa resting place ولاnor غمضاsleep
They turn their eyes about the valley of cares,
They roam with tearful eyes in the valley of worries,
and have found among them neither a resting place nor sleep.
And did not get used to rest or sleep there.

وماand not تركواthey left فيهاin them سماءsky ولاnor أرضاearth
In their homelands they meet the desolation of separation,
They find in their homelands the gloom of separation,
though they have left neither their sky nor their soil.
And left behind no sky or land there.
وماand not عرفواthey knew يوماًever إلىfor الناسpeople حاجةa need

وماand not حملواthey bore يوماًever إلىtoward أحدٍanyone بغضاhatred
They never once knew need of other people,
They never knew a day when they needed people,
nor ever bore hatred toward anyone.
And never carried any hatred towards anyone.

And whoever among them guarded his verse and eloquence,
Whoever protected his poetry and rhetoric
despite his afflictions, guarded dignity and honor.
Keeping his dignity and honor intact.

Nor could those they brought low be raised
Could not elevate whom they put down,
by fate, nor could it bring low those they raised.
By decree, nor humble those they raised.

And if they found none just in giving and withholding,
If they saw no justice in giving and withholding,
then they have the greater right to command giving and withholding.
It was best they controlled both giving and withholding.

Come, their brother, and witness today their remembrance
Come brother, today witness their mention,
of your loyalty, sincerity, and fresh, tender art.
Your loyalty, sincerity, and refined manners.

You departed; the earth wore you away, and you left them
You passed away and the soil wasted you, leaving them
on earth, its vicissitudes painfully wearing them away.
On earth, its events wearing them down.

And now they are emptied of all but the pledge, restoring
They were free except for their pledge to return
to your pure body its stirrings and pulse.
To your pure, passionate, pulsing body.

And now they find among mankind no one hastening
They spent the night not finding any neighbor
to goodness, nor a generous soul who urges what is good.
With kindness, nor generosity in good company.

فمنthus from ذمةa pledge ترعىis honored ومنand from واجبa duty يُقضىis fulfilled
The mourning once held for you has become a recurring observance:
The past mourning is for you, and has become a season,
a pledge is honored, a duty fulfilled,
So whose responsibility is it to observe, and whose duty to fulfill?

Every soul has taken from you a noble whisper
that has taken on within the soul your height and breadth.
That has settled into it, your length and breadth.

Within these hours, for all of time
In these moments, for all time,
and your immortality, lies all that space has gathered and scattered.
And your eternity, what the place comprised and what it left out.

Each seeks his consolation in your absence,
And each seeks in your intimacy his consolation
turning to you with what he bore by night and what he confided.
With what he confided in you and what he disclosed.

And resurrection is only this: to see brothers of yours
Resurrection is only that we see for you brothers
discharging toward you their trust and duty.
Who fulfill the trust and duty to you.

Come see man attacking

His own kind with insults and abuse.

He who built up the world with his right hand still
In the life of this world, with his right hand
seeks with his left to tear its works down.
He seeks to destroy what with his left hand he built.

ولمand not تستطعwas able فيin النفسthe soul جرحاًa wound ولاnor رضّاa bruise
You endured the fire of battle and its steel,
You endured the fire of turmoil and its blades
and it could neither wound nor bruise your soul.
Yet could not wound or content yourself.

You cry out at what you suffer and run after it,
You protest what you endure and race after it
yet the people heard neither the outcry nor the running.
But the people did not hear the protest or the racing.

Had you cried out in grief atop a lofty, polished palace,
Had you cried out atop an impregnable fortress
the lofty, polished palace would have swayed with you and collapsed.
The impregnable fortress would have collapsed and crumbled.

You endured, deprived, and looked away, making allowances;
You suffered deprivation and overlooked excuses
and the best judge of excuses is he who overlooks.
And the best expert in excuses is one who overlooks.

You were free of doubt in every circumstance,
You were innocent of doubt in every situation
and none met with your acceptance or rejection.
Yet did not find acceptance or rejection from me.

Had any poet tasted in his life what you tasted,
Had any poet but you tasted
other than you, he would have dictated no book, nor signed one.
What you tasted, he would dictate no book nor line.

Will you find in your death what satisfies you?

Your kindness to me was a loan, and I
Your treatment of me was a debt, and I
surely repay that loan with my tears and my blood.
Repay it with my tears and blood.
