Are you a monastery monk, or unaware

of the world, knowing neither bliss nor ease?

And you prefer simple folk around your dwelling

to a gathering whose members ravage one another.

You have shed all but a wealth of experience,

and forsaken all but truth and fresh literature.

It is grief enough that I see what pains me,

yet I do not turn from the sight, nor can I close my eyes.

I groan and complain that I have no power,

among a people in Egypt, to grant or withhold.

    Discord, factions, despair, and dread,

and a lofty aspiration whose champions are sick.

And Ripon has taken to deliberately reviling the Turks,

and proclaims hostility and hatred toward the Turks.

And he pities Macedonia and its rebels—

and how many pledges they have broken, how much honor they have sullied!

And Morocco is bereaved, and in India there is anguish,

and in Russia, strife is tearing her to pieces.

If he fears fierce, recurring war, why does he

provoke one forbearing and powerful, who has long turned a blind eye?

And is it Grey's to command and forbid among us,

so that he withholds what he rejects and grants what he approves?

Then may the blessed Nile never quench my thirst

if it does not return to its people wholly free.

Nor am I so despairing as to change my character,

even if God were to change the heavens and the earth.
