The beauty took firm hold of my reins,

When, through her, I became absorbed in what troubled me.

So they said to me, "Describe her beauty to us."

So I said to them, humbled by her:

I do not know; but whoever comes to her

Cannot possibly return to other beauties.

And if her tresses bring night,

A dawn comes, mingled with chrysanthemums.

And if her firm-set rump brings a curved sand dune,

From her comes a graceful sway, like a slender bān shoot.

And they said, "Describe to us your yearning love for her."

So I said to them: My heart is too narrow for this.

For no part of anything in it can be discerned,

Nor does it have a state peculiar to any time.

Nor will distance save you from it—certainly not—

Nor remembrance of beautiful women, nor drawing near.

Nor does concealment cast it into hiding,

Nor is it plainly visible or clearly expressed.

Rather, at times I die, and at times, because of it,

I am deaf of ear, my tongue tied.

And at times my heart wanders, and at times

I sprinkle the earth's face with pearls.

And its fruit is sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter.

May it be struck—may it!—with what it hurled at me.
