ألا إنما أمر الشبيه مسلّم

وأمرك أمر الشعر ما قلته نطقا

Lo, the matter of the look-alike is simply conceded.

Indeed, the command of the beloved is surrendered

And your affair is that of poetry; I did not utter it aloud.

And your command, the command of poetry, whatever you have spoken

وإن نحن أخفينا الهوى وهو كامل

وإن نحن أخفينا الهوى وهو كامل

قصدنا على الألباب من جهة الرفقا

قصدنا على الألباب من جهة الرفقا

And if we concealed love, though it was complete,

Even if we conceal love while it is complete

We intended, in one respect, gentleness toward minds.

We aim for minds gently
