Behold, I am truly enthralled by love,

when a slanderer and a watcher thwart a lover.

And neither Majnun nor Kuthayyir has

my share; still less does Nusayb harbor it.

    And I delight in what you said of longing and youthful passion;

you are no stranger to that realm.

If indeed agonizing longing has banished reason,

then the state of lovers’ hearts is hidden.

Longings lead them at times, and at other times

they have sighs mingled with sobbing.

One who has tasted longings discerns them; neither

the expert guide nor the wise man can discern them,

even if a narrator constructs a line of poetry.

And poetry is nothing but praise—and you forgot.

O our neighbor, we are indeed two strangers here,

and every stranger is kin to a stranger.
