1. 1

    1

The city has become a cave,

And the face of the horizon has become a tunnel,

Since the joy of tranquility left me,

    And my sun set:

The most precious thing I gained in life,

The brightest light in nights of oppression,

The freshest joy when sorrow thickens,

She who inspired my melodies, jubilant poems, and song,

    She who inspired my defiance,

More beautiful than gardens of roses... and than the glitter of seas and rivers,

Purer than dew and the consciences of revolutionaries,

Than the pride of martyrs, than the ambitions of the free.

My sun, whom setting took by surprise,

My sun, from whom I began as a smile that knows no withering.

And here I am before farewell's solemn awe, a choking grief drifting into bewilderment.

A calamity the size of an earthquake splitting the earth's heart...

A sorrow longer than anything long.

The city has become a cave,

And existence is a tunnel, dark and crazed.

  11. 2

    2

Does death walk upon the eyes of flowers?

    Or is it that crime

Has taken the place of water in my homeland, and of the colors of violets?

This is an obliteration long preserved by the hands of obliteration.

The nightmare sweeps over me... the horizon has become one of dust's captives.

And I search for refuge in the conscience of palm trees,

For shelter in the pupils of violets,

For a rhyme-letter drifting in the wind, catching up with rhymes wandering like moths,

With meanings, as they rain calamity when silence took hold.

Is this what the meaning of death leaves behind?

Or is the beginning in the spreading of outpourings through the twilight of weeping?

I do not know which of the two beating hearts is left!

A heart over the embers of tears... or a heart, in the cloud of the unseen, shrouded by earth?

    I do not know!

Is she the one who vanished?

Or am I the one poured into the twilight of absence?!

    The poems lost their radiance at the setting of the sun—my sun;

And I peeled away from existence,

    And I lost my throat.

    3

I, inhabited by sobs—absence struck me dumb.

    3

    The companion said:

Pour your tears into the eyes of flowers!

I said: The pomegranate blossom has fallen asleep,

And the pupils of lilies are immersed in mystery.

Where can I find roses to pour my blood upon, to seek refuge from calamity!?

I am a lover, my friend,

    And love begins in annihilation,

    And love ends in annihilation.

He said: Reclaim the pride of going to the gallows!

I said: The gallows were yearnings, when my sun taught me to ascend.

    He said: Take heed!

You taught the garden branches how to shine in spring.

I said: Spring is a sun never surprised by setting,

And song is some of the lemon's fragrance in spring's dim light,

And rapture is my beloved, tender toward me like spring,

And my poems come from a smile that gave me the meaning of being,

Or a surge of anger that separated me from the meaning of falling.

There is no time except for weeping.

So take the heart's outpouring as rubies—the poem will take you by surprise,

And leave the groaning for a day other than desolation's; awe will seize you.

Had it been a life of trivialities, I would not have kindled my grief,

But it was a life mingled with jasmine's splendor.

Every second in it is winged longing, and elation that neither tires nor grows weary.

We fold away the years of drought,

We build the state of the poor,

We wash away every ugliness clinging to the mind of things,

Then remake the seconds, gleaming like dew in the eyes of flowers after dawn.

The nightingale's outpouring is our eternal anthem, and dreams our paradise.

I wonder, what does lightning say when it splits the face of night?

    Does it tell our story?

And is there a breath of us in the native lily?

I give distance what suits its rosy face, hoping not to part from the joy of persistence.

I turn aside for nothing... except a twilight that has circled through my arteries,

To protect the pomegranate blossoms and guard the pools,

I grant them bulbuls, radiance, and song.

There is no time but to go with the waters to the end.

    I chew over my dreams,

    Yes, I chew them over.

  41. 4

    4

Have I anything but dreams, with this night staring at me!?

    Do not reproach me!

The nightingale's reverie is its guarded refuge,

More impregnable than the kinfolk's fortresses in Sirwah...

But into the splendor of the pomegranate blossom

    My sun has gone deep.

So shall I swallow my grief dry, then go into the maze?!

If it led to the face of the sun, I would have taken it and gone.

    But sorrow is night,

    I fear the night,

    Stillness frightens me,

    شنيعةً تبدو

    And I flee the horrors of darkness;

    They appear hideous,

And the horizon seems a sea of ash.

And what I love most in the sea is its blue, with the glow of sunrise.

    How gentle she was!

She pulls my hand, and we go over the face of the water, we go like gulls,

And now there is only one hand.

Who will take the solitary hand!?

Will memory take the sun's place!?

From which direction will its next rising come?

  52. 5

    5

It is as though I see nothing on the horizon but friends dressing the wound,

And dew washing a heart like water.

O shooting stars, from whose brows solace shines!

Do not close off the smiles!

This is loneliness occupying the directions around me... you alone are the meaning of safety.

And you alone, in pitch-dark moments, are moons without night,

    And moons without a horizon,

And moons whose absence vanishes while they remain present.

The sea vanishes, leaving its color behind,

And it is in the twilight of friendship.

The lemon forest spreads its fragrance at dawn,

With the dew in spring's dim light.

The palm tree departed, and my sun... then this sea denies we ever came to it, and the gulls—

When the heart longed for waves, the gulls took fright.

    So you alone, stay!

    6

    And I shall remain alone.

    6

    Conclusion

In the desert I have what awakens longing... in departure I have

What passionate love holds of allure, as I journey by night into mystery,

So I begin from I know not where.

I walk upon veils, a mirage of longing or illusion,

I fly in an azure expanse,

And over a sea of agate, my ships have voyaged by night.

I am the one enthralled by memory and noble pain.

I grant emptiness the meaning of creation... in absence and dissolution I create

All the meanings latent there at the beginning of existence, and behind the secrets of the beginning.

What has absence to do with me!

The expanse of your eyes enfolds my heart, and this heart has flown

Toward what will not be erased.

In the soul... shades dwell in my depths,

And shades soar in the inner recesses.

Who can erase the shades when they inhabit the depths... who?

    O Creator of things!

I seek refuge in her shade; grant it the meaning of emergence,

And bestow upon the moments that remain all the serenity of faith,

Or else let me join the awe-inspiring caravan.
