    1

In the solemn majesty of Muhammad Abduh Nu'man's procession

    1

    How distances narrow

When the young man is a banner,

And caravans are wings venturing deep into dreams,

Or a dream venturing deep into the unseen.

He fashions his night journey and the road,

Crosses where the wind does not cross,

Goes farther than lightning flashes can reach,

And storms the purple twilight heralding dawn!

O twilight that cleaved the face of the lean nights

And tore the flank of bewilderment and silence,

O fist that mastered the fugitive seconds and life's forelock,

    How distances narrow!

How the desert wastes rest in men's footsteps!

And he who was lightning at the caravan's head, laying roads in a downpour, and at

The road's end a song, distributing his inspiration in every direction,

    And flooding existence with melodies.

    And how distances vanish

When the country is the conscience of night travel,

    2

And the singer is the country's conscience!

    2

A memory the years have lost rests on sorrow's shore,

And a memory that has lost the memories of youth,

And the songs' outpouring at the moment of emergence,

And the pride of squares thronged with men,

Kissing rifle muzzles out of passionate longing,

Erasing the guilt of the nights,

And weaving from dewdrops a sunrise brimming with hope... and light.

This is an expanse of pomegranate blossoms upon a palm of agate,

And that is the seconds' outpouring,

    Arranging a lifetime of downpour

    And an age of liberation.

    Distances melt.

You are no possibility behind the clouds,

Nor is the earth's brow hollowed by chains and buried in abject stillness.

So how many homelands have passed,

And the bier above the palms is a great question,

And your face in the bier's dimness recites praises,

Weaving the age's memory in moments of sunrise,

    And your creative days,

And the caravan weaves us into a procession that never vanishes!?

So how many homelands have passed!?

    How many memories pass!?

And this is your passage from the filth of collapse, fleeing to God's oasis,

Taking refuge in the springs' purity.

You tell us how miracles yearn,

How dew does not become mud,

    Nor foreheads become sandals,

And how escape from bowing becomes a passage into the fine silk of belonging.

So how many homelands have passed above the palms!?

And does the bier draw a map for the country

    And for the people?!

    Does it contain a homeland,

Or conceal the sorrows in a time of brokenness?

    And the young man...!

    Does the young man die?

Or remain a festival on the brows of dew?

    And the songs...?

Does silence inhabit the face of the songs?

Have they gone in every direction as an echo?

Whenever the question grows insistent in the full moon of departure,

The branches of a life that ended in an outpouring bear answers as fruit,

And the path drinks deep of dew from the violets' eyes,

Sending their wonder as clouds in every direction,

And granting the days of your outpouring

The secret of piercing stillness... the meaning of possessing what is to come,

    The uprightness of palm trees,

And the springs' pride in the virgin moment of spring's vigor.

So shall I rest on sorrow's balcony?

Do barren elegies ravage the forest of violets?

Or does this one, moving above the palms in celebration of the beginning of your emergence,

From the blue of the alphabet as a letter,

And from the darkness of oblivion as a trumpet call,

Herald oblivion for the valleys of Ma'rib?

The mirrors search in emptiness for the face of their days.

And when I ask, I yearn for the stone's reply.

I breathe in a lung the ribs have lost.

    I call wounds eyes,

    And call coffins a horizon,

And this absence a presence that arrays the ages on my palms and summons

    The eras...

My soul no longer masters dreaming.

So let me shroud bereavement in the tunnel of illusion,

    In the pit of sundering!

And let me call the comrades ashes,

And call the palm trees bowing,

    And all the streams sand,

And that vanishing has ravaged the mountains,

    Life,

    Souls,

The glow in the surges of poems,

    And that song is nonsense!

    I remembered,

As the bier passed above the palms,

The birds streaming toward you in the moment of rapture,

And how flowers stood upright on the eyes of bullets!

And how existence was crowned with passions!

    I remembered, my friend,

    Gusts of dust passing,

And a dawn scattering light along the flanks of existence,

Arranging the purity of wounds upon a hill's face,

Then washing another with the pure water of foreheads.

Do you remember?! Or does this disappearance shatter, within time,

    3

    The memory of departure?!

    3

I no longer know how many homelands have passed,

While the bier above the palms counts the dates,

Tallying beginnings in the search for a homeland swimming in light,

And for a homeland that feeds people freedom,

And for a homeland from which love takes its details on a journey of pride,

A homeland that breathes liberation with the fullness of sunrise and stores the meaning of release!

I no longer know how many homelands have passed!

    How many processions have passed!

How many breaths of sublime belonging have passed over the soul!

And how many epochs the bier contains!

How many sighs of the millions' longing for expression it has held,

And did the palms raise it in supplication to God to safeguard their dreams!

Or do you see it as the choice of a path,

And a pledge to walk until hope is possessed!!

If death's splendor cast aside its charms, the secret would be revealed,

This heavenly mystery would lift from the bier's balcony,

So that we might see how seconds become majesty,

And how their hidden essence startles the desolation of collapse!!

    Then "Ayban" rises,

The gardens tremble in the splendor of the majestic passage,

Turning their scorching days into springs,

    And emerging a virgin,

    Sana'a emerges a virgin,

Walking behind you in a procession that is not adept at bowing and knows no bending.

    How many homelands!?

How many comrades have shunned the path of light,

And been surrounded by the world of unions,

How many... then how many... then how many...!?

And you alone guide the night travelers,

Leading the way toward the sun's brow,

    Inspiring it to emerge!
