    Dawn

was bloodstained on both palms, darkened in its innermost self.

And the horizon was heaving with gasps...

And the celestial spheres were pensive... and the violets' pupils, not downcast,

    stare at marvels.

Behold, our spring has blossomed in winter,

    and our processions breathed fragrance,

    and the pink lily leaned...

a neck embracing a sharp sword...

and a pistol yearning to kiss the lilies.

And Hawra is led forth as a bride.

What wedding is there beyond things?!

Its procession walks over the flowers' eyes,

and ululations from the night's hissing follow it,

    and the light breaks.

And dawn flees outside things... within them...

    it escapes,

and the celestial spheres, in their yearning, do not know... nor do we!

Is it in the heart of time

    that we live?

Or do the celestial spheres inhabit us, and our tears drink the moonlight...?

    The sea is astonished,

    and indeed our astonishment

is a sea: our boats upon it are our plucked pomegranates.

Hawra... a beating heart, its sides pierced,

and the sea's water anchors above our wounds...

    and astonishment roars.

The horizon is a crimson shape,

    and the expanse...

between the sword's edge and the ruby,

    the expanse is confined.

    And a pistol,

    dusk,

    and a bowed head,

and something of trivialities... and hatreds

crown the head of a serpent pursuing us.

Then the sea comes... abandoning its waves,

so it becomes our last protector,

    and becomes our last refuge,

and the rainclouds of roses and pomegranates keep pouring down.

And this sea bears witness that Hawra was not quenched,

    but the caves—

    their ghouls are thirsty.

And our agonies did not pour down,

but we poured ourselves into departure,

to nail the pomegranates onto their branches,

    and say: Blessed be!

Indeed, a midwife prepares to raise the newborn sea.

    And we start in fright,

yet the garden, the forests of foreheads,

    has forgotten its fears,

and silt from the dam's remnants that held it firm.

And the hurricane has its might,

and the lush garden of lilies

has depicted the crime with its eyes,

    and loftiness falls.

    We listen,

then hear a voice recounting the tale:

Their heads did not strike the earth when they fell,

    but the dust

    foamed and frothed,

then rose and met the precious harvest.

At the sword's edge, it met them,

and where its deep-red downpour cascaded, it was a palm of carnelian

    that shielded radiance from falling,

and lodged in the heart of the clouds

    this chrysanthemum-hued, pure water,

    the rosy dew,

    this beginning,

this expanse stretching between the lilies and the sky.

This is the beginning when we accept it,

    and this the ending.

    What ending!?

Our pomegranates swelled on the rock's breast,

so we learned the meaning of pomegranate blossom,

and learned that dawn is preceded by twilight,

and night does not come if the horizon does not turn around us,

and we came to know the different paths.

Behold, we come to you from a sea formed by springs of fury.

    What is in our hands

when the axe caresses our great trees,

and the earth's collapse embraces our garden,

and we are struck by capricious fate!?

    What is in our hands—

we ready them for bouquets of flowers,

and for a playful child's hair,

    and for a nipple,

    and for a spring's water,

and they yearn for the olive trees?!

But they thrust in the pistol by force,

and our fingertips refused the wager,

and scattered between the face of the earth

    and the shrouded horizon,

between a neck and a sword!

between the prison cells and the gardens,

between our eyes and the murk of desolation,

between intoxication and the forests of graveyards...

    in longing,

    the fingertips scattered,

to reorder the minutes, the seconds, and time,

and reweave you, O Sana'a, from pearls,

from our innermost selves they adorn it,

and from our desires, our passions...!

    Will you not show tenderness!

We are hostages to the wager,

and we are hostages to the wager.

    I know

that you are mysterious as the face of the wind,

and evocative as the heart of night,

    and the reaches of space.

And I admit, O Sana'a, that reading two pensive eyes is difficult,

and that your secret is a talisman,

and your love, your passion, are like the ocean's depths,

and I do not know the hidden secret.

    But...

Have my steps forgotten the path when I head toward you,

and when longing bears me toward night vigil and prayer,

    there in your sacred prayer-niche,

where our souls overflow with supplications in the spectrum's hue,

with which winged longing weaves us?

Our steps are astonished, and the caravan is astonished,

and the driver of the white camels, and the plaintive melody—

our astonishment was born in it and in the road.

And behold, we are bound for the prayer-niche in lightning's flashes,

our litanies are a necklace of gleaming stars,

and this river recites them in reverence,

    and the expanse.

What distances dissuade lightning from crossing and traveling?

An eye tries to depart from the features of your silver face,

and the days are a memory and something of devotion,

    the violet field is supplicant,

and the wind crosses it, and our hands,

and behold, the sky looks out from your eyes,

a thunderbolt portraying us in the form of a supplication or an orbit.

For you alone, the clouds are laden,

    and time's memory,

and toward you this light journeys,

and yours are the radiant hymns and splendor,

    and the rarest of suns,

    and yours is hope,

and dawn, our filly, is bound for you,

    yours is hope,

    yours is hope.
