Happiness lost his way and came to me,

while the heart was wrung by the hand of sorrows.

So I laughed until my tears wet my cheek,

and I wept from my joy and from my sorrows.

This happiness, who had been oblivious to me,

gazes at me and can scarcely see me.

Before now I had not known him, nor

had he been among my close friends before now.

How, I wonder, did he lose his way and come to me,

    and cross ages of estrangement?

O joy, how did you come to me?

Who, I wonder, told you my address?

Why do I see you as though your heart were unaware,

    intoxicated, never sobering from addiction?!

Happiness rubbed his eyes, and a question rose

from his lips about me: who might I be?

So I replied: I am a poet, tormented by

the falsehood and slander in the universe.

Then his lips smiled, revealing a shining light,

and he said: Pardon me, reformer of the worlds.

Pardon me... I forgot... and I did not mean

to disturb your sorrow with fleeting happiness.

And he departed... leaving in my heart a breath,

like light in the darkness... like faith,

growing and wiping the sorrow from my heart.

And I learned some of the virtues of forgetting.
