لمّا رَأيتُكَ والقلوبُ خوافقٌ

لمّا رَأيتُكَ والقلوبُ خوافقٌ

تَلتاعُ حولكَ والنُّفوسُ حَيارَى

تَلتاعُ حولكَ والنُّفوسُ حَيارَى

When I saw you, with hearts throbbing

When I saw you, and hearts were harmonious,

in anguish around you, and souls bewildered,

Circling around you, and souls were bewildered,

والنّيلُ من هَوْلِ الفِراقِ كأنّما

والنّيلُ من هَوْلِ الفِراقِ كأنّما

يَسْقِي البلادَ دماً ويقذفُ نارا

يَسْقِي البلادَ دماً ويقذفُ نارا

and the Nile, from the terror of parting, seemed

And the Nile, from the horror of parting, was as though

to water the land with blood and hurl forth fire,

It watered the land with blood, and spewed fire,

أيقنتُ أنّ اللهَ غَيَّرَ ما بنا

أيقنتُ أنّ اللهَ غَيَّرَ ما بنا

وأَرادَ أمراً بالبلادِ كُبارا

وأَرادَ أمراً بالبلادِ كُبارا

I knew for certain that God had changed our condition

I was certain that God had changed what was between us,

and willed something momentous for the land.

And intended great events for the land,

وإذا أراد اللهُ نجدةَ أُمَّةٍ

وإذا أراد اللهُ نجدةَ أُمَّةٍ

نَصرَ الحُماةَ وأيَّدَ الأنصارا

نَصرَ الحُماةَ وأيَّدَ الأنصارا

And when God wills to rescue a nation,

And when God wants to save a nation,

He grants victory to the defenders and strengthens the supporters.

He aids its defenders and supports its helpers.
