Umm Sulaym is justified, O Abu Talha.

And can Islam feel safe from unbelief's treachery?

You asked, and she said, “My dagger—I guard myself with it

against harm from every assailant whose traits include treachery.

With it, in the thick of battle, I slit his belly

if he means me harm and the situation grows perilous.”

Do you marvel at her—how she guards her honor

and wards evil off herself if evil assails her?

And she calls to God's Messenger—are you listening?—

so he rejoices at the echo of her words and smiles.

Yes, you protect her, yet her own spirit

has an inborn gallantry and a pride of its own.

Did you not see her when she said, “Shall I kill a band of men

who turned and fled, with neither fierce valor nor endurance?”

And what blame is hers when she spares you concern for her

and hurls you against the champions while gain is veiled in dust?

She wanted you for the momentous task, and you will not see

a noblewoman like Umm Sulaym, won by a noble man.

Did you not string twenty horsemen on your sword,

their spoils diverse and their war trophies many?

When one of them flew off in retreat to escape death,

his breast met you in the flight path of death.

You wade through spilled blood, with no bridge across it,

and in such a crossing, no bridge serves you like faith.

O Abu Talha, hear what a noblewoman's son says,

to whom gladness flowed from both cheeks of his neighbor.

He says, “Mother, stab whomever you wish, and champion

with your valor a faith whose battalions include victory.”

So hail to you, Abd Allah! You are not like one

who sees a sheathed sword and is seized by terror.

    فَطِبْتَ وطَابَا لا خَفَاءٌ ولا نُكْرُ

    Both your parents followed a noble person's way;

so you are noble, and noble are they—plainly and undeniably.

Whenever Islam seeks, in any crisis

that weighs upon it, a reserve—you are its reserve.
