    To Tayy, O cousin of the Prophet,

    to a people who worship the idol,

    فلن يَلبثَ الشِّركُ أن يُصطلَمْ

    to al-Fals, amid your victorious troops;

    for idolatry will soon be utterly destroyed.

    It led minds astray and blinded hearts,

    and made souls wretched and crushed resolve.

    I see that Tayy has forsaken its god,

    so there is no refuge and no shelter.

    What a god—he tastes humiliation,

    then shuts his eyes to it and takes no revenge!

    فَزالَ الجَلالُ وبَادَ العِظَمْ

    His might has passed, his glory folded away;

    majesty has vanished and greatness perished.

    فَتلكَ تَفارِيقُه ما تُلَمّ

    And now raging winds scatter him;

    there lie his scattered fragments, ungathered.

    And there are his spoils, released,

    which had been held captive since ancient times:

    swords that remained throughout the ages,

    held in trust for the inheritors of nations.

    They wearied, beside al-Fals, of the age of darkness,

    then became the inheritance of the one who dispels darkness.

    Al-Rasub and al-Yamani shone through him,

    and the keen blade gleamed in his two palms.

    Nor had the eyes of mail-clad warriors seen

    anything like his coats of mail, so precious.

    You returned with them, O cousin of the Prophet,

    and with sheep driven back, and livestock,

    and with captives taken as spoils, who saw no

    defenders of their honor as they were seized.

    The Prophet passed by Suffana,

    and she rose toward him, pouring out her pain.

    فما حقُّ مِثليَ أن يُهْتَضَمْ

    She said: I implore you—show me mercy;

    for it is not fitting that one like me be wronged.

    I am the daughter of one who, among his people,

    was the sworn companion of openhandedness, the ally of generosity.

    بلى إنّه للجوادُ العَلَمْ

    And you have no doubt about Hatim;

    indeed, he is the famed exemplar of generosity:

    he frees captives and gives to suppliants,

    clothes the naked and shields those in his care,

    spreads greetings of peace and honors pledges of protection,

    feeds guests and satisfies the craving for meat.

    فلو أنّه كان فيهم رُحِمْ

    He said to her: Such is the character of believers;

    had he been among them, he would have been shown mercy.

    Noble, he loves fine virtues,

    and, for love of them, hates to be reproached.

    I have shown you mercy; if you rejoice,

    then another has more cause for sorrow and care.

    فذلِك دينُ الهُدى لا جَرَمْ

    She said: I bear witness with those who bear witness;

    for that is surely the religion of guidance.

    I saw the path and chose it,

    and left the religion of blindness and deafness.

    He clothed her, gave her a mount, and poured

    upon her an abundant flood of wealth.

    She departed with blessings, and praise went forth,

    roaming the plains and sweeping over the hills.

    She came to her brother and said: Adi,

    I deem the truth most worthy of being followed.

    And I have held firmly to a clear course

    in this matter; O son of my father, take the straight path.

    فثَمَّ هُدَى اللهِ باري النَّسَمْ

    Abandon idolatry and go to Yathrib;

    for there is the guidance of God, Creator of living souls.

    There, there is the lifting of blindness,

    and the quenching of thirst, and the healing of sickness.

    هناك الرّسولُ الكريمُ الشِّيَمْ

    There is the Prophet, great in majesty;

    there is the Messenger, noble in character.

    فَطُوبى لمن رَامها فَاعْتَزَمْ

    There is salvation for perishing souls;

    so blessed is whoever seeks it and firmly resolves.
