Thirsty ones seek to drink their fill—who is it that drives them away?

Are they to be held back, while the peoples come to water in varied ways?

Leave them with cool water, to quench their thirst with it,

while their entrails and livers have not yet melted.

It is death if their thirst-maddened ones are driven from the watering place,

and remain bewildered in the hands of whoever leads them.

Is it just that a nation should not raise her head,

when the caller urges her on, but her chains forbid it?

Shackles of every kind have been prepared for her, but in truth

her shrouds and graves have been prepared for her.

So there is no justice until her rights are restored,

and her independence and existence are granted her.

If Egypt is not sovereign and does not live free,

then no Egyptian has a life he desires.

And peoples will not grasp the meaning of their lives

if they are afflicted with a foreigner ruling them.

We accepted what the president decreed; if there is

a just code of his, then those are its bounds.

We seek a free life among the kingdoms,

whose good fortunes dawn upon us after ill fortune.

Our affairs in Egypt are our own; through us she seeks the heights,

so we fulfill her wishes and give her more.

Judgment will be given in our favor, if there is anyone just on earth,

for the restoration of rights whose denial cannot be borne.
