the herald of death walked among them, and they fled in panic.

The raider robbed it of life, and

the hands of inward passions uprooted its glory completely.

O realm of the Mawali lords, how did death lay you low

and assail that majesty and charge upon it?

Wretched was the life whose calamities burdened you with

an incurable disease that crushes steadfast mountains.

The kingdoms walked humbly around your bier,

while al-Hafiz walked behind it, swaggering.

    لَو كانَ ذا قَلبٍ يَحُسُّ لَسالا

    He walks, pride streaming from his sides;

if he had a feeling heart, it would have melted.

You are the slain one, and you did no wrong; you merely

met one who enjoys peace of mind while you suffer.

We weep, but our weeping makes him laugh, and he delights in

what he acquired and gained from the slain one's blood-money.

    فَإِذا اِضمَحَلَّ أَعارَها اِضمِحلالا

    Kingdoms survive so long as their independence survives;

but when it vanishes, it lends them its own extinction.

Where is the caliph? What befell him? What ails him?

He pleased the raider and obeyed the assassin.

Your Majesty, your end holds a lesson

for rulers—and an evil end it was.

You squandered what the defenders had guarded from loss,

and destroyed what the builders had raised so high.

And when heedlessness takes firm hold of kings,

then sovereignty is swiftest to vanish.

Only a seasoned man can protect the crown,

one who weighs affairs and assesses circumstances.

Watchful over events, he suppresses their evil

and dispels overwhelming trials and terrors.

The life and death of nations

are in kings' hands, in guidance and misguidance.

No nation has risen whose rulers slept, heedless of it,

    and embraced neglect and negligence.

Beware, kings of the East: behind you are

people who rush to raid again and again.

They have filled the expanse, and I surely take them for

tricksters on the soil of the East, or ghouls.

It is as though Dhu al-Qarnayn's barrier were suddenly struck down,

and your Lord willed it to pass away, and it passed away.

a paralyzed people and a slothful nation.

that accepts humiliation and grows used to abasement.

Bewildered amid life's turmoil, it delights

in remaining a burden upon the nations.

Foolish, it forsakes whoever rises to defend it,

and keeps supporting the deserters rather than him.

And when the guides call upon it, you see it

disobey the guides and follow the misguided.

The nations strive, while we, in our heedlessness,

    shun deeds and multiply words.

They rode the backs of storm winds, while our habit

is to ride illusions and hopes.

O East, what is this stagnation? Are you dead,

that we should prolong our wailing around your remains?

Had you not died, you would have heard the call of a crier

who terrified the ages and alarmed the generations.

O You who raise the dead for the day of their return,

they stream from their graves in throngs.

Restore life to a nation laid low by

its heedlessness, leaving it prostrate for long years.

And light its paths of deliverance, that he may find guidance

who strayed from the clear road and turned aside.

And watch over it with good gifts, and grant it

safety from You, and protect it from fears.

And graciously bestow upon it, from Yourself, a strength

that weakens fetters and splits shackles.

Do not make it an emblem of humiliation

that shames faces, nor an example of stagnation.

And unite our scattered fragments in sincere brotherhood,

for they have scattered right and left.

Mutual hatred has ruined us among the nations,

splitting hearts and tearing limbs apart.

We do not awaken, and still, to our ruin, we remain

among those of humankind whose deeds are wasted.

Calamities grow rampant in our midst,

and our intractable sickness grows ever more severe.

We amuse ourselves and play, ignorant; and I

truly regard the life of the ignorant as an absurdity.

Alas for the sorrowful East, and for a nation

that seeks neither dignity nor independence.

    God alone rules over kingdoms

and directs destinies and appointed lifespans.

He struck the fugitive realm with a calamity

that left the dwellings of its sovereignty in ruins.

Why did he not emulate the khagans who

filled the age with awe and majesty?

Those who guarded sovereignty with the might that

    shattered kings and made chieftains quake;

those who barred the raider's path

with a sword guarding the thicket and the cubs.

They safeguarded the caliphate, and its banner rose high

in grandeur, and lay beyond the enemy's reach.

They made its pillars spearheads and sword edges,

and lofty, immovable forms that seemed mountains,

and black crouching forms, past which Death moves,

    then takes fright at their glances and is appalled;

and squadrons filling the fray, and battalions

that refuse repose until they find combat.

They suckled the draughts of war and could not swallow

afterward, wine or sweet flowing water.

The caliphs' concern is peace, while theirs

is never to cease contending with heroes.

He once disdained to be their peer

and to count them his equals in majesty.

Delusion toyed with him, and he squandered his kingdom,

and exchanged it for humiliation and ruin.

And when God wills harm for a man,

he follows the wayward and obeys the ignorant.

A caliph who gives away the lands, and another

who loves singing women and adores red wine?

Is this a deluded man's arrogance and an ignorant man's infatuation?

Wretched are the caliphs in conduct and deeds!
