قُلْ للأمين أقم لِلحُرِّ مَأتَمه

قُلْ للأمين أقم لِلحُرِّ مَأتَمه

لا النّيلُ حُرٌّ ولا الدُّستورُ مأمونُ

لا النّيلُ حُرٌّ ولا الدُّستورُ مأمونُ

Tell al-Amin: hold the free man's funeral.

Tell the trustee to prepare a funeral for the free man

The Nile is not free, nor is the constitution secure.

Neither the Nile is free, nor is the constitution safe

أَشاهدُ الزُّورِ مَرجُوٌّ لأُمّتِه

أَشاهدُ الزُّورِ مَرجُوٌّ لأُمّتِه

والمؤمنُ الصّادقُ الوجدانِ ملعونُ

والمؤمنُ الصّادقُ الوجدانِ ملعونُ

Is a false witness his nation's hope,

I see the ministers hopeful for their nation

while the believer, sincere in conscience, is accursed?

While the truthful faithful is cursed

يُؤذَى بأسوأ ما يُؤذَى الهُداةُ بهِ

يُؤذَى بأسوأ ما يُؤذَى الهُداةُ بهِ

من فِتيةٍ كلّهم نَشوانُ مفتونُ

من فِتيةٍ كلّهم نَشوانُ مفتونُ

He suffers the worst abuse inflicted on guides,

He is hurt by the worst that the guides are hurt with

from youths, all of them intoxicated and beguiled.

By young men, all of them infatuated and tempted

الحمدُ لله هذا ما أعدَّ لنا

الحمدُ لله هذا ما أعدَّ لنا

شيخُ الزّغاليلِ والمغبونُ مغبونُ

شيخُ الزّغاليلِ والمغبونُ مغبونُ

Praise be to God! This is what has been prepared for us

Praise be to God, this is what was prepared for us

by the sheikh of the squabs—and the cheated man remains cheated.

By the chief of rogues and the fooled one is fooled
