Take your time, Ibn Harb; you lack the mettle for the like of this.

You can only return burning with rage, or perish.

This is a searing raid; if you wish, set out,

and if you wish, sit back and take a cool resting place.

a rampart of unbelief, the like of which he had never seen?

Such is God's promise; had you been a believer,

you would have known for certain that God never breaks His promise.

a bird of good omen for yourselves while you worship anyone but Him.

and you are no Abu Sufyan unless your anguish grows.

Easy now—may God guide you! You will never find

his equal in battle, if you rouse him to battle.

And alas for those driven as troops to Yathrib!

You seek aid from Huyayy ibn Akhtab

and his companion—far from it! You made the distance greater.

    You were turned back from the door you came to knock upon;

and what an arrow it was—one you had no power to ward off!

Horsemen went out stealthily with their swords,

but found no sword and encountered no scabbard.

They strike the palms, diverse in fruit, as though

striking a fiercely hostile band among their enemies.

and his companion, while sleek horses pursued them.

On them rode youths, radiant-faced and blessed,

racing to death's watering-place, seeking immortality.

he had summoned a fierce, untamable gale that reckons mighty forces feeble.

and flee unburdened; do not let your plight turn disastrous!

They scattered in flight, leaving roasted-grain flour behind them—

a heap, a gift to the enemies of their masters.

They supplied them unwillingly; had they kept

their oaths, they would have been an offering to their swords.

    Keep back, Ibn Harb! War has a glowing ember;

when it rouses a man of valor, he makes it burn more fiercely.

It is victory, or death's assailant descending

upon every armored warrior—no escape and no refuge.

You fled, fearing death in the thick of battle,

at the hands of those who find death sweet there.

Is it right that you do not worship God alone,

and bow to al-Uzza, becoming her slave?

    Two divergent paths—you surely know,

if you make sound judgment your deputy, which of them gives truer guidance.

You returned enraged, gaining no vengeance for a fallen man,

nor did you soothe your kinsmen's fury or rancor.

Quraysh turns away from you because you lied to it

and fed it hopes—ah, your long anguish, if only it availed!

Speak the truth: there is no peace for humankind

on earth until they worship the One, the Unique.
