Speak on, sons of Egypt, you deaf and blind!

The anguished one cried out, and the captive's cry arose.

Do you turn away with eyes and hearts,

and run unbridled with ears and minds?

The book was unsealed, and from its pages flowed

the Nile's mourning rites, streaming with crimson blood.

Death's gesture stood clear in its heading,

and none signals through a heading more eloquently than death.

Weigh matters, for injustice is ruin,

and the fairest of people judges with a balance.

What more do you want after today? Awaken!

God accepts no excuse after clarification.

Do you believe in a Lord who has no partner,

or do you believe in idols and graven images?

A religion of shame, whose foundations were never raised

except upon your obedience and submission.

the worst calamity is unbelief after faith.

and may God protect no habitual traitor among them.

until they hurled a flood of it at their people.

the remnant of the torrent of falsehood and slander.

his ugliness and hatred plain, naked.

nor ever veil his shame-stricken face.

the wolf keeps faith with sheep more truly than you.

had this transient, perishing thing not deceived you!

A kingdom of prestige never raised for any mighty one

    among kings, nor amassed for a khagan;

and an obedience whose foremost vanguard reached beyond

the deepest recesses of soul and body.

A blind obedience to which Egypt never lowered her wing

under Pharaoh's violence or Haman's might.

Had you been other than yourself, you would not have been content with a station

for a nation you believed in without proof.

You gestured, and it rallied, tendering its allegiance,

and gave itself freely, in groups and singly,

amid a headstrong calamity of time, full of wrath,

hard to lead, surrendering no reins,

twisting its bits and running fiercely toward its goal,

neither docile nor slow and weary.

and its throat, in tyranny and aggression,

who hurts the defiant and assails everyone of standing,

like a hunter assailing his quarry when it bolts,

with every savage beast, wide-mouthed and hollow-bellied.

Bravo, son of the Nile! No injustice, no bias:

you repaid your people forgetting for forgetting.

    دَعها تَضِجُّ وَتَشكو غَيرَ أَسوانِ

    Your country clamors, complaining of what you have done to it;

let it clamor and complain, while you feel no sorrow.

What harm is it to you if it passes the night terrified,

distraught, while you pass a night of ease and contentment?

If you repaid its favor with ingratitude,

it has met every benefactor with ingratitude.

by injustice to the innocent and support for the guilty offender.

so raise yourself above disgrace and loss.

one I tend in lofty literature, and that tends me.

before the One, irresistible in sovereignty, the Judge.

A companion of honor, of unmatched standing

among peers and companions in love of Egypt.

chaste in its pages, in private and in public.

from poetry's fire, or hurls a volcano.

what do you stir up but the cawing of crows?

do I possess any remnant of Solomon's knowledge.

and the nights' secret is abroad after concealment.

and unite in judgment, gray-haired and young.

anything but volcanoes of grudges and rancor?

Abuse surges all around them to extinguish them,

yet only makes their blaze more rampant.

O our people, before your ordeal, have you ever seen

anyone stand to quench fires with fires?

Who will bring me every swift, steadily advancing tide,

    and every pouring, ceaseless downpour?

the grudges of a heart sated with the Nile's water.

in the lion's claw, which guards it for its appointed time.'

and every reviler has wielded censure against us.

and the matter has many forms and colors.

Where are the treasures of knowledge and understanding?

over sides and pillars that weep for him?

what he chose today—a grave and shrouds?

I seek protection for you from a fidelity denied

by the patience and solace within your breasts.

Take the path to the heights, and race

for glory on every racetrack and arena.

Is the call of truth more deserving to be heeded,

or a call that issued from a devil's belly?

    ماذا تُرَجّونَ مِنهُ بَعدَ إيذانِ

    Today their sender has given notice of the signs;

a serpent's fang will fasten upon every jugular vein.

nothing but disloyalty, and never contemplated kindness.

throughout the worlds with plotting or betrayal?

Those who have raised truth's banner ever since they were known,

    each pleased or angered for God's sake;

    وَاِستَصرَخَت مِن بَنيها كُلَّ غَيرانِ

    and cries out to every zealous son for help;

    each sacrificing wealth without regret,

and each giving his life without boasting.

which everyone of intellect and feeling raises high.

the beats of a heart ringing with love's whispered communion.

scales brimming with merit and preponderance.

to God—the one who went about accusing us of rebellion.

    wolves fear every wakeful one.

yet none is like the loss of peoples and homelands.

nor does sleep pass over their eyelids.

can a matter be restored when it has grown hopeless after being possible?
