Sons of Bakr, what good is reproach?

Battle has flared, and the keen sword has stirred.

A faithful covenant, and blood held sacred,

And Khuza‘ah's might, not to be assailed,

Guarded by a protector who never sleeps.

Those who cast aside fidelity helped you,

And the men went on, walking under cover.

The crime of one who did wrong is not hidden.

Muhammad's swords have been made the requital—

What, then, of vile aggression, and what of reckless violence?

You killed at al-Watir, from among Khuza‘ah,

Men to whom no warner had come.

How vile is treachery, an abhorrent trait!

O people, to the rescue in this great calamity!

Was Muhammad one to be wronged?

They came to him, a delegation invoking the alliance,

Whose grievance utterly shatters men of honor.

He told them, 'You shall have aid,' and made ready.

And he set out, leading an army to war,

    Shaded by the noble angels.

Abu Sufyan, that is what you see:

It is unwavering might, nothing else.

Have not the bonds of the alliance already weakened?

How, then, can its strength be restored after that?

Leave them, son of Harb, and find right guidance.

And hold fast to truth, for truth brings greater good.

Muhammad's path—follow it; it guides more truly.

And take a pledge from him, son of Harb,

Within it stands a pillar of honor for your house.

With al-‘Abbas you went to the Messenger,

For the greatest goal and the noblest wish:

For God's faith, the faith of men of reason,

    Among those generous, upright men.

I have told you truly: darkness is not like light.

You met Muhammad, noble and rightly guided,

So through his blessing you returned a new being.

You were guided, though you had been a stubborn tyrant.

Joy to you! Walk with happy fortune,

For what your magnanimous companion bestowed on you.

You gained all goodness and right guidance

At his hand, and through him attained your wish.

He has given you, son of Harb, such bounty!

May your Lord bless you and then give you more.

And with God is fulfillment sought.

You looked—have you seen any more steadfast,

And fairer in appearance, and greater in worth?

Battalions of God's soldiers, in succession,

    Pass before you, one and then another;

Their order comes from their exalted faith.

They proclaim their Lord's greatness and know Him to be true,

And offer their lives for Him, and so live on.

Glad tidings to you! You enjoy ease, though once you suffered.

What favors from God you receive!

Great indeed they are; they have no end.

Excellent indeed are the two companions who were saved,

    Despite long hesitation and delay:

    Hakim and Ibn Warqa’, who

Sought God in what they desired.

For there is no refuge except in His way.

Each of the two men is a noble, generous lord,

With ancient honor among his people.

    A chief came, accompanied by a chief;

    Thus the mighty faith prevails,

And the great nobles recognize it.

For you, Hakim, and for Ibn Harb, there came to pass

A decree that increased the love in every heart.

And who is more worthy of love than the Guide,

And who more deserving of closeness than his clan?

Quraysh are his people, and he is the leader.

When people's hearts begin to flutter,

Then from your two houses come refuge and shelter.

And with you both, the shades of safety spread,

And life's waters run clear for those who come to drink.

Those two houses are both inviolate.

And within the banner's sanctuary, for every soul

That seeks refuge in it, there is protection from every danger.

The nobles of Mecca see it above the head

Of one of blessed disposition, no weakling,

Among the men who prayed and fasted.

The banner of Abu Ruwayhah—how mighty!

A banner that stands as a symbol of faith,

It shakes the polytheists' hearts profoundly,

And turns their might to weakness and helplessness.

Who, then, will aid those men if the clash comes?
