أَفتىO youth of العَوارِفِkind deeds وَالعَواطِفِand compassion حاضِراًwhen present
وَفَتىand youth of العَزائِمِfirm resolves وَالعَظائِمِand mighty deeds غائِباwhen absent
O youth of kindness and compassion when here,
The saints and the tender-hearted pronounced you present,
And youth of resolve and mighty deeds when away.
And the resolute and mighty pronounced you absent.
أَرضَيتَyou pleased قَومَكَyour people وَالهِلالَand the Crescent وَدَولَةًand a state
عَزَّتgrew strong بِهِمَّتِكَthrough your resolve الكَبيرَةِgreat جانِباin standing
You pleased your people, the Crescent, and a state
You made your people content, as well as the crescent moon,
Whose standing grew strong through your great resolve.
Through your great resolve you achieved glory.
فَكَأَنَّماso as though كُنتَyou were الخَميسَthe army عَرَمرَماًvast
وَكَأَنَّماand as though كانتit was قَناًspears وَقَواضِباand keen-edged swords
So it was as though you were a vast army,
It was as if you were Khams, the well-armed,
And as though your resolve were spears and keen-edged swords.
And as if Qana were boats and canoes.
عَظَّمتَyou honored حُرمَتَهاits sanctity وَصُنتَand you safeguarded ذِمامَهاits covenant
وَقَضَيتَand you fulfilled مِنof تِلكَthose الحُقوقِrights الواجِباwhat was due
You honored its sanctity and safeguarded its covenant,
You honored its sanctity and protected its authority,
And fulfilled what was due of those rights.
And fulfilled those necessary rights.
وَدَّعتَناyou bade us farewell وَمَضيتَand you went on لاnot مُتَمَهِّلاًlingering
تَلقىyou face شَدائِدَhardships جَمَّةًmany وَمَصاعِباand difficulties
You bade us farewell and went on without delay,
You bid us farewell and departed hastily,
Facing many hardships and difficulties.
To meet severe and perilous adversity.
وَأَقَمتَand you dwelt مُغتَرِباًaway from home وَماyet not اِغتَرَبَwas a stranger اِمرُؤٌa man
يَنأىhe journeys far فَيَتَّخِذso he takes العَزائِمَfirm resolves صاحِباas a companion
And you dwelt abroad; yet no man is a stranger
You remained an exile, though no man becomes an exile
Who journeys far and takes resolve as his companion.
Except he who shuns his people and takes resolve as friend.
تَأسوyou heal جِراحَthe wounds of الباسِلينَthe brave مُسالِماًas a man of peace
وَكَأَنَّماand as though تَغشىyou enter الجِلادَcombat مُحارِباas a warrior
You heal the wounds of the brave as a man of peace,
You endure the wounds of heroes peacefully,
And seem to enter combat as a warrior.
As though you wrap the executioner engaged in battle.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though جِئناwe came نُعَظِّمُto honor غازِياًa campaigning warrior
مَلَأَhe filled المَسالِكَthe paths وَالدُروبَand the roads كَتائِباwith battalions
And it is as though we came to honor a warrior on campaign
It was as if we came to glorify a warrior
Who filled the paths and roads with battalions,
Whose regiments and troops filled the roads.
هَزَّhe shook المَنيعَthe impregnable one مِنَamong الحُصونِthe fortresses فَهَدَّهُso he razed it
وَمَضىand advanced البَلاءُvalor بِهِwith him فَبَزَّso he surpassed الغالباthe victor
Shook the impregnable fortress and razed it,
He shook the impregnable fortresses and razed them,
And valor carried him onward, so he surpassed the victor.
And calamity took him, so he emerged the victor.
لَيسَis not الثَناءُpraise لِخامِلٍfor an idle man أَوor جاهِلٍan ignorant man

Praise is not for an idle or ignorant man
Praise is not for the inactive or ignorant
Who spends the evening at play amid grave events.
Who at the events of fate remains blithe.
