O throne of the tsars, when destiny runs its course,

thrones fall, and crowns fly away.

A tremor seized you at the height of your splendor,

before whose majesty the ages were thunderstruck.

The suns quivered around you and knew for certain

that the pillars were betraying the towers.

All the tsars were shattered and laid low

by what time and calamities had torn down in you.

Within you, Mikhail and Peter were brought low

by what Paul tasted and Ivan lamented.

They raised your structure ever higher, but did not stop

until it split apart and the edifice came to an end.

You kept hunting kingdoms, taking aim,

until the One, the Judge, shot you down.

    فَهَوى بِشامِخِ عِزِّهِ الرَجفانُ

    A throne around which tremors massed;

then the quaking toppled its towering might.

    فدنا وَغالَ إِباءَهُ الإِذعانُ

    They assailed it; it rose haughtily, and their wrath surged;

then it sank low, and submission consumed its defiance.

The peoples of the earth cried out at its fall,

    and fates and countries shook.

Look at the glory of thrones and their might,

how it is humbled in the House of Romanov.

And at the tsars—how their dominion is stolen

by time's vicissitudes and its treacherous turns.

Indeed, he whose might shook kingdoms

now has his heart shaken by sorrows.

His peoples and his cares rose against him,

so the flood and the volcano joined forces.

They worshipped him on his throne out of awe,

until he fell—and behold, he was a man.

The peoples acquiesce up to a point; then, when they refuse,

the defiant one yields, and the angry one obeys.

And if government weighs affairs by one man's measure,

it cheats the peoples, and the scales betray it.

Under the protection of consultation and beneath its shade,

all kingdoms are protected and preserved.

    فَالكُلُّ تَحتَ لِوائِها إِخوانُ

    It draws the peoples close when their affairs diverge;

for all are brothers beneath its banner.

And judgment shines brightest when cleared of

its doubts and illuminated by proof.

All glory and majesty belong to a nation

whose resolve is true and whose standing is exalted.

    فَالعَيشُ ذُلٌّ وَالحَياةُ هَوانُ

    Proud defiance bore it onward, while others submitted;

for them, living is abasement and life humiliation.

    God alone rules over kingdoms,

and everything has its span and appointed time.
