O state, a remnant of tyranny, encircled by

annihilation's ravager, so that its star has set.

Vanish, for you were only a pall that was lifted

from souls, and only a mourning gathering now veiled.

Vanish to a place sunk in remoteness, utterly cut off,

which no seeker of reconciliation can reach.

God's providence does not spare states

from which people suffer woe and dispossession,

which see the peoples as slaves, owed no protection,

and deem that right in this world belongs to whoever prevails.

The people, as events seize them, cannot escape

a burst of wrath that terrifies the heavenly spheres and meteors.

Nothing has strengthened kingship and preserved its bloom

like gentleness and justice, while they endure and go together.

How squandered is the crown whose wearer assails the people

with provocations, and harms them with what he has gained!

He builds fortresses, deluded by their strength,

and masses wide-mouthed cannon and swords.

And he brings in poised, sleek steeds; he is thrilled by

their neighing, and readies the clamorous host.

Until, when the people are convulsed by their fury,

what he amassed of these, and what he brought in, bring him low.

Are they peoples governing the earth, or livestock

ruled by slaughter, which expects no posterity for them?

    ما هَزَّهُ الشَوقُ إِلّا أَنَّ وَاِنتَحَبا

    Today an exile delights in his native lands;

longing never stirred him without his groaning and sobbing.

He scatters his soul among diverse, far-flung

regions, and folds away his life, waiting.
