ياO بَنِيsons of غُنْمِGhunm بْنِson of عَوفٍAwf ماwhat لكمwith you
يا بَنِي غُنْمِ بْنِ عَوفٍ ما لكم
تَجعلونَyou make الدِّينَreligion كَيْداًa scheme وضِراراand harm
تَجعلونَ الدِّينَ كَيْداً وضِرارا
O sons of Ghunm ibn Awf, what is wrong with you,
that you make religion a scheme and a means of harm?
أغَضِبْتُمdid you grow angry? إذwhen بَنَىbuilt إخوتُكمyour brothers
أغَضِبْتُم إذ بَنَى إخوتُكم
فيin قباءٍQuba مَسجِداًa mosque يهدِيguides الحَيَارىthe bewildered
في قباءٍ مَسجِداً يهدِي الحَيَارى
Did you grow angry when your brothers built
in Quba a mosque that guides the bewildered,
فاتّخذتُمْso you set up غَيْرَهُanother besides it تَبغونهyou intend it
فاتّخذتُمْ غَيْرَهُ تَبغونه
فِتنةًa source of discord للنّاسِfor the people جَهْلاًout of ignorance وَاغْتِراراand self-delusion
فِتنةً للنّاسِ جَهْلاً وَاغْتِرارا
so you set up another, intending it
as a source of discord for the people, in ignorance and self-delusion?
وَجَمعتمand you gathered فيهِin it منfrom among أشياعِكمyour followers
وَجَمعتم فيهِ من أشياعِكم
كُلَّevery غاوٍerrant man يجعلْmakes السُّوآىutter wickedness شِعَارَاan emblem
كُلَّ غاوٍ يجعلْ السُّوآى شِعَارَا
And you gathered in it, from among your followers,
every errant man who makes utter wickedness his emblem,
مُفْتَرٍa fabricator يَهْذِيbabbles بقولِwith words of الزُّورِfalsehood فيabout
مُفْتَرٍ يَهْذِي بقولِ الزُّورِ في
سَيِّدِthe master of الرُّسْلِthe messengers ويُؤذيهand harms him جِهاراopenly
سَيِّدِ الرُّسْلِ ويُؤذيه جِهارا
a fabricator who babbles falsehoods about
the master of the messengers and openly harms him.
ياO بنِيsons of غُنمِGhunm بنِson of عَوْفٍAwf إنّهاindeed, these are
يا بنِي غُنمِ بنِ عَوْفٍ إنّها
شِيَمُthe ways of الحَمْقَىfools وأخلاقُand the manners of السُّكَارىdrunkards
شِيَمُ الحَمْقَى وأخلاقُ السُّكَارى
O sons of Ghunm ibn Awf, these are indeed
the ways of fools and the manners of drunkards.
استفِيقُواcome to your senses إنّهindeed, it is the case قدalready جاءكمhave come to you
استفِيقُوا إنّه قد جاءكم
منfrom among جُنودِthe hosts of اللهِGod أقوامٌbands of men غَيارىzealous
من جُنودِ اللهِ أقوامٌ غَيارى
Come to your senses: indeed, there have already come to you
from God's hosts, bands of zealous men.
قالsaid مَولاهمtheir master هَلُمُّواcome فاهْدِمُواthen demolish
قال مَولاهم هَلُمُّوا فاهْدِمُوا
مَسجدَthe mosque of السُّوءِevil جِدَاراًa wall فَجِداراthen another wall
مَسجدَ السُّوءِ جِدَاراً فَجِدارا
Their master said, 'Come, then demolish
the mosque of evil, wall after wall,
وَابْعَثُواand unleash النّارَfire عليهِupon it جَهرةًopenly
وَابْعَثُوا النّارَ عليهِ جَهرةً
إنّماonly المؤمنُthe believer مَنْone who يُصْليهِburns it ناراwith fire
إنّما المؤمنُ مَنْ يُصْليهِ نارا
and unleash fire upon it openly;
only he who burns it with fire is a believer.'
صَدَعُواthey complied openly بالأمرِwith the command وازْدَادَand increased الأُلَىthose who
صَدَعُوا بالأمرِ وازْدَادَ الأُلَى
طَاوَعُواthey obeyed الفاسِقَthe evildoer ذُلّاًin humiliation وصَغَاراand abasement
طَاوَعُوا الفاسِقَ ذُلّاً وصَغَارا
They openly obeyed the command, and all the more were those who
obeyed the evildoer humiliated and abased.
زَيَّنَhe made seem fair الفاحِشةَthe abomination الكُبْرَىthe greatest لهمto them
زَيَّنَ الفاحِشةَ الكُبْرَى لهم
فَأَتَوْهاso they committed it لاnot يخافونَthey fear البَوَاراruin
فَأَتَوْها لا يخافونَ البَوَارا
He made the greatest abomination seem fair to them,
so they committed it, fearing no ruin.
