O people, what is in your bags?

I see the people undone by anxiety.

You came to us, and Egypt spent the night trembling

at what you carried, while the Nile was burning.

Do those people know that we lack sound judgment,

or does the delegation not know that we do not agree?

They have long dwelt in our midst,

yet never have we trusted them, nor they us.

    إِنَّ السِياسَةَ مِنها الجَهلُ وَالخَرَقُ

    Bind your headbands tight and reject their statesmen's counsel;

indeed, politics has its share of ignorance and folly.

Let no one tamper with your independence today,

and let neither deception nor flattery beguile you.

Unite your forces around it; do not disperse into factions,

for without it you have no comfort in life.

Do unjust rulings not torment you,

and do the shackles and halters not bite you?

What has the delegation reaped but what you are told?

God is greatest! The matter is grave—so race ahead!

Time looks on, and the generations bear witness,

and judgment belongs to God: no fear, no dread.

Do not wrong Egypt; the sign of righteousness is

that neither injustice nor oppression should terrify her.

Has anyone dishonored his native soil or betrayed his nation,

except a man with neither faith nor moral character?

Wealth has enslaved men who, if they were told,

'Wade through God's torment to reach it,' would rush forth.

They are the leaders in asceticism and piety—

if the shrewd diviner could be deceived!

I never thought fate would rule in our favor

one day, only for passions and paths to diverge.

Contention has dragged on, and the people have come to follow

the paths of discord—some splitting off, others parting ways.

    فَلا وَرَبِّكَ ما بَرّوا وَلا صَدَقوا

    Let those people not claim that we are a nation without order;

no, by your Lord, they have neither acted rightly nor spoken truth.

Those who gain nothing from earnestness will yet follow it,

and those who babble and fabricate will recognize the truth.

Be patient with our people until there returns to them

some of the lost good sense that rashness swept away.
