O people, God indeed commands you
not to be supporters of the people of oppression.
not to be helpers to the unjust.

O my people, if you do not obey God, He will rain upon you
My people, unless you obey God, He will rain upon you
a scourge, and envelop you in shame and ruin.
torment, and envelop you in disgrace and ruin.

O my people, do not support one whom He does not support,
My people, do not support anyone whom He does not support,
nor be brothers to one who opposes Him.
nor be brothers to anyone who has opposed Him.
يَلقىfinds العِدىthe foes طاعَةًobedience مِنكُمfrom you وَمَسكَنَةًand meek submission
إِذاwhen اِستَبَدّواthey rule tyrannically وَيَلقىand finds اللَهُGod عِصياناdisobedience
The enemy receives obedience and servile submission from you
The foes find obedience and meek submission from you
when they act as tyrants—while God receives disobedience.
when they rule as tyrants, while God finds disobedience.
إِنّيindeed I أَخافُI fear عَلَيكُمfor you حادِثاًa calamity جَلَلاًgrave
لاnot تَملِكونَyou possess لَهُagainst it رَدّاًa defense إِذاwhen حاناits time comes
I fear for you a momentous calamity
I fear for you a grievous calamity
that you will have no power to repel when it arrives.
that you will have no power to repel when its hour comes.

I see for you, in Time’s post, a message
I see a message for you in time's post,
within which the blood already shed surges as its heading.
in which spilled blood surges as its heading.
ماwhat عُذرُexcuse قَومٍa people تَمادواthey persisted فيin عَمايَتِهِمtheir blindness
لَمdid not يَألُهُمfail them رَبُّهُمtheir Lord نُصحاًin counsel وَتِبياناand clarification
What excuse have a people who persist in their blindness,
What excuse have people who persist in their blindness,
when their Lord has spared no counsel or clear explanation for them?
when their Lord has withheld neither counsel nor clarification?
لاnot يَأمُرونَthey enjoin بِغَيرِanything other than الظُلمِinjustice أَنفُسَهُمthemselves
وَاللَهُwhile God يَأمُرُهُمcommands them عَدلاًjustice وَإِحساناand kindness
They enjoin upon themselves nothing but oppression,
They enjoin nothing but injustice upon themselves,
while God enjoins justice and goodness upon them.
while God enjoins justice and kindness upon them.
أَتصِدفونَdo you turn away عَنِfrom الآياتِthe signs ساطِعَةًshining
تَجلوdispel العَمىblindness وَتُضيءُand illuminate القَلبَthe heart إيماناwith faith
Do you turn away from the signs, radiant,
Do you turn away from the radiant signs,
that dispel blindness and illumine the heart with faith?
which dispel blindness and illuminate the heart with faith?
مِلتُمyou have turned away عَنِfrom النورِthe light يَمحوdispels كُلَّevery داجِيَةٍdark night
وَاِنصاعَand wandered away رائِدُكُمyour guide فيin الأَرضِthe earth حَيراناbewildered
You have turned from the light that effaces every darkness,
You have turned from the light that dispels every dark night,
and your guide wanders the earth bewildered.
and your guide has wandered the earth, bewildered.
لَمّاwhen ذَهَبتُمyou roamed سَواماًgrazing herds لاno رُعاةَshepherds لَهاfor them
سالَتpoured عَلَيكُمupon you فِجاجُthe passes of الأَرضِthe earth ذُؤباناwolves
When you went off like grazing cattle with no shepherds,
When you roamed as grazing herds with no shepherds,
the earth’s broad passes poured wolves upon you.
the earth's passes poured wolves upon you.
تَنازَعَتكُمpulled you apart أَكُّفُthe hands of الطامِعينَthose greedy بِهاfor it
فَأَصبَحَso became الجَمعُthe multitude أَسراباًflocks وَقُطعاناand herds
Hands coveting the land fought over you,
The hands of those coveting it pulled you apart,
until the united whole became scattered flocks and herds.
so the multitude became flocks and herds.
هَلdo تَملِكونَyou possess مِنَof الدُنياthe world لَكُمfor yourselves وَطَناًa homeland
أَمor تَعرِفونَdo you know بِهاin it عِزّاًglory وَسُلطاناand sovereignty
Do you possess anywhere in this world a homeland of your own,
Do you possess a homeland of your own in this world,
or know within it any dignity or sovereignty?
or know glory and sovereignty within it?

Today Islam’s poet weeps for Islam
Today Islam's poet weeps over it,
and fills the age with wailing and resonant lament.
and fills time with wailing and lamentation.
ضَجَّcried out الكِتابُthe Book وَضَجَّand cried out البَيتُthe House مِنout of أَسَفٍsorrow

The Book cried out, and the Sacred House cried out in grief,
The Book has cried out, and the House has cried out in sorrow,
while God’s Messenger spent the night among you in anger.
and God's Messenger has passed the night among you in anger.

O nation of the Nile, rise today and surge forth!
O nation of the Nile, rise today and set forth!
Do you not see that Islam’s sanctuary has been brought low?
Do you not see that Islam's sanctuary has been brought low?

Restore life, and drink deep at its watering places;
Come to life, and drink deep at its watering places;
I see the Nile, rich in rivers, thirsty.
indeed, I see the Nile, with all its rivers, thirsty.

Take your share of might and honor,
Take your share of glory and of honor,
and bid farewell to all that was a life of humiliation.
and bid farewell to your past life of humiliation.

فَاِستَرسِليso follow freely إِثرَهُمin their wake شيباًgray-haired elders وَشُبّاناand young men
God is greatest! The people have already marched forward;
God is greatest! The people have indeed advanced;
then follow in their wake, old and young alike.
so follow in their wake, gray-haired and young alike.

Each strives after the right, seeking it
Each strives in pursuit of his right, seeking it
from a usurper who dealt him abasement and humiliation.
from a usurper who subjected him to abasement and humiliation.

A new age, and a world in which we shall not be wronged,
A new age, and a world in which we are not wronged,
nor taste what we tasted in the world we knew.
nor taste what we have tasted in our world.
