My soul be your ransom, beloved banner!

Every resolute, battle-trained warrior has guarded both its flanks.

The mighty one submits to him without reproach,

And the intrepid warrior bows to him without rebuke.

When a calamity befalls the homeland,

He assails it with the like of a blazing flame.

Responsive when you call him to arms, poised for action,

    Swift when you seek his aid, ready to spring;

A man to trust, whose might cannot be denied,

Nor is his lightning amid calamities a rainless flash.

They are the comrades who safeguarded the homeland's banner,

And charged against its enemies, unafraid.

They charge toward death as armored warriors charge,

When war bares its grim, scowling face.

When they sought a right, they rallied and massed

Against those who had seized it, and returned without disappointment.

At a time when supporters were few, and some turned away—

Men who play whenever urged to be earnest.

They prolonged their counselors' toil, nor would

The words of an admonishing counselor restrain them.

Whenever they see a pass toward blind error, they race

Toward it; but if guidance appears, they turn aside.

They sleep their fill, heedless of their homelands,

Though they are not blind to their watchful foe.

How strange, then! How can one rest in a place of doom,

And how can one sleep between fang and claw?

Ah, would that they lay dead on the path of decay!

And the fickle traitor's life is like death.
