Lo, repeat the news of Maher's victory!

And oh, what a dazzling victory over the foe!

And who opposed the noble free man but a man

angry and rebellious against the state of free men?

It soothed the soul that Muhammad's adversary returned

with shameful steps, walking away with a loser's bargain.

Muhammad, this is part of your due; so seek

the rest of it, and claim it in full without waiting.

For one like me sees boldness as a man's nobility,

and one like you accepts his due only in full.

Some men stepped forward, contesting glory with its rightful possessors,

and strove in haste to lay false claim to glorious deeds.

So they saw no man among us but one who held back,

nor found among our people anyone but a supporter.

If you leave the matter, hoping for its outcome,

then you cannot ensure that it will not be lost.

Have you not seen that I was true to my pledge,

so I turned aside until every wicked man outstripped me?

And a man like me has no helper against fate

when it assails me with the arrogant pretender.

I submitted to loyalty's judgment, and was undone by

the fickleness of a treacherous people given to tricks.

And I am not one to go bargaining with a people

who set up a market for consciences in the Nile Valley.

By your life, the rights of peoples are no jest,

nor is the sanctity of homelands a merchant's merchandise.

Advance: your standing still is of no use; fulfill it—

the wish of a free man of high renown and noble standing.

I praised the people's deed when they shunned caprice,

and came to salute them with a grateful man's greeting.

Congratulations to them: their striving deserves no blame,

nor did their fortune falter when they preferred you.

Those are the free among men; would that they were

numerous when the rival in numbers strives in earnest.

And would that you sent good tidings every day,

for the gap between me and glad tidings has grown long.

May good be yours; bring your brother relief with a good deed,

and if one bound by a pledge forgets, be the best of those who remember.

For whom do you leave noble deeds? And do you see

anything but literature, fresh in its chivalry and flourishing?

When poetry renders truth its due with pure intent,

then that is the Nile's voice, not a poet's voice.
