Leave aside Egypt’s independence, for we have learned

the secrets of the matter, and the veil has been lifted.

Leave aside your independence, O people; we

    disavow this independence of yours.

Take it to the graves, then bury it,

and tell the leader, “May you live on.”

So if there is another plan, then hurrah!

    And otherwise, discontent and defiance!

    فَما يُغني الضَجيجُ وَلا العُواءُ

    Leave it aside—an uproar with no good in it;

for neither clamour nor howling avails.

Does the fervour of every free man anger you,

    whom honour and loyalty rouse?

Take your fools away from us, O people,

for forbearance and modesty have lasted long.

Shall we turn away from your words, while

wicked necks refuse? That is the affliction.

Are we free men who struggle, or merchants?

And is there selling or buying in Egypt?
