Keep ties with your brothers and honor your pledges,

And quench the burning thirst within our breasts.

    أما تَسْقُونها إلا ضِراما

    Be gentle with our hearts, sons of our father;

Will you give them nothing to drink but flames?

By the life of the Two Rivers, we have lingered,

Soothed with hopes, year after year.

We are driven from the watering pools while we are parched,

So we reach neither clear waters nor brimming pools.

Be gentle, our people; we have found

Estrangement from our people an incurable disease.

And when we seek redress, we seek no

    Judgment from anything but generosity.

We have known you through adversity as kin,

Men of noble standing and generous brothers.

So visit our land, or make it—

Even if Iraq is angered—your abode.

Would it resent a brother loving his brother?

And would it deny the two their reunion?

We found the slaking of thirst it denies us

Forbidden, even should burning thirst kill us.

    Hearts never leave it—

Ours, like birds that fluttered, then circled.

Their flocks set forth, then swept along as winds,

And passed like clouds through their airy courses.

They had scarcely risen over the Two Rivers when

Love snatched them away, and they fell in heaps.

Guardians of the Two Rivers, if only we could,

We would make the sun and moon a greeting for you.

A pure greeting from the radiance of poetry,

I set it rippling, and it streams forth freely.

Its radiance keeps flowing, filling the earth,

And drives the darkness from its sides.

You arrived in processions from ages

Whose splendor was restored, so they appeared mighty.

Ages that came forth from us and you,

Speaking of our forefathers of old.

Drawing forth a tongue from their spearheads,

And sending speech from their reins.

We recalled them, and they were stirred by a passing vision

Of memory, though they had become crumbling bones.

And Arabhood cried, 'God is greatest!' when it saw us,

So they sprang upright from their resting places.

I see them raising, as we remember,

Their necks and heads behind the gathering.

Good evening, our fathers; be of good cheer,

For yours is a glory that shall never be humbled.

We restored the East to its old course, and arose

To tend its affairs until they were set right.

Time called upon us, and we were awakened

By calamities that rouse sleeping nations.

We drive off the beasts that hungrily seek us,

And refuse to be food for them.

And if we did not resist them, they would destroy

What remains of us, hunting and devouring.

I see them round us, hastening and surging,

Like waves of the sea, crowding thickly together.

Back with you! Seek prey other than us,

For our flesh has become poison.

Whenever you defy the well-wisher and feed on it,

As is your wont, you will be fed a swift, deadly death.

Refusing to let the sons of Arabhood be abased

Are powers that cannot be overcome or assailed.

Even if raids assail them one after another,

They neither weaken nor tire of the clash.

Press on in the struggle, sons of our father,

And jealously guard Arabhood, and hold fast.

When you alight by the Tigris and Euphrates,

Salute the valiant people along both rivers.

And if adversities strike, remember us,

And say: 'A nation that honors its pledges.'
