It reached the worlds and alighted without a greeting—

an Eid that rose from the edges of a mourning gathering.

No welcome to Eid! Its caravan has come,

floating and sinking in a surging sea of blood.

No sooner did the peoples' hopes appear in a vast sea

than their allotted lifespans vanished in a vast sea.

A sea of swift death, replenished

by a sea surging with irrevocable doom.

Time looked on, and its events were struck with terror

at the anguish of the drowning and the sorrow of the swimmers.

And it turned aside, seeking escape, but was held back

by a fate that surrounded it while it was still unaware.

Events disclosed the calamity kept secret,

which they had masked with an outward show left unconcealed.

Those marvels are each day a portent

that hurls a dark calamity at the children of this world.

The universes flounder within it, and tumble—

bewildered before it—the suns and stars.

    Mercury's face crashes into Mars,

and al-Mirzam's right hand gashes its head.

O Eid, you renewed sorrows with an appearance

that wore away the cheer of your former days.

What anguish have you brought to a nation

bowed beneath the burdens of oppressive calamities?

She grew weary of patiently enduring calamities through four

black years that dawned with all that was most ill-fated and ill-omened.

She cast her last spark of life and her soul's lifeblood

into a lion's two claws and a speckled serpent's two fangs.

Alas for her who sought refuge with me, stirring me!

What does she seek from the maimed, armored warrior?

Time is not at my hand's command, nor are its vicissitudes

subject to me like one abased and forced to submit.

It hurls days, as though their harsh ones were

    arrows piercing every rib.

They tore through every coat of mail woven from resolve,

and cleft every compact mass of lifeblood.
