أَصُدُّI turn away بِوَجهيwith my face عَنfrom كَثيرينَmany إِنَّنيindeed I
أرىI see المَرءَa man تُرديهِbrings him to ruin الحَماقَةُfolly وَالجَهلُand ignorance
I turn my face away from many, for I
see how folly and ignorance bring a man to ruin.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَستَصبيI surely deem childish الغَبِيَّthe fool وَأَزدَريand I scorn
أَخاthe possessor of المالِwealth لاno عِلمٌknowledge لَدَيهِwith him وَلاand no فَضلُmerit
Indeed, I deem the fool a child, and scorn
the man of wealth who has neither knowledge nor merit.
وَهَلand would? يَتَخَطّىstep beyond مَوضِعَthe place of الحَزمِprudence فاضِلٌa man of merit
لَهُhe has أَدَبٌrefinement فيamong قَومِهِhis people وَلَهُand he has عَقلُreason
Would a man of merit overstep the bounds of prudence,
one who has refinement among his people, and reason?
أُكَلِّفُI charge جِدَّseriousness in الأَمرِaffairs نَفسيmyself وَلاand not أَرىI see
سِوىother than أُمَّةٍa nation خَرقاءَfoolish شيمَتُهاits nature الهَزَلُfrivolity
I demand earnestness of myself in affairs, yet I see
only a foolish nation whose nature is frivolity.
تَمُرُّpass بِهاby it الأَحداثُevents وَهيَwhile it بِنَجوَةٍaloof
فَسِيّانِso both are alike مِنهاof them ماwhat يَمُرُّis bitter وَماand what يَحلوis sweet
Events pass it by while it stands aloof,
so their bitter and their sweet are all the same to it.
كَأَنَّas though بِهاin it خَبلاًmadness يُخامِرُclouds عَقلَهاits mind
وَماand not يَستَويare alike العَقلُreason الصَحيحُsound وَلاnor الخَبلُmadness
As though a madness were clouding its mind—
and sound reason and madness are not alike.
أَرَدتُI wished لَهاfor it عِزَّthe dignity of الحَياةِlife فَأَعرَضَتbut it turned away
تُريدُit wants حَياةًa life ماnot يُفارِقُهاleaves it الذُلُّhumiliation
I wished it a life of dignity, but it turned away,
wanting a life that humiliation never leaves.
