I see blood flowing ceaselessly in Egypt, the Quiver,

and the herald of evil has not ceased to run and toil.

By my life, grievous indeed is the calamity of a nation

whose sons betray its covenant when it is stricken.

And I had never feared that the eye would see young men

absorbed in pleasures, playing and reveling,

as though nothing in Egypt had terrified her,

and no ashen day of ill fortune had befallen her.

Your mercy, Lord of mankind, upon the souls that

spend the night bewildered by affliction, tossing and turning.

They are tormented by the calamities that have terrified them,

and by the horrors of destiny they await.

Your mercy! The faces of life have indeed been shrouded,

and the faces of death have grown red, blazing.

To You we have returned in repentance, seeking refuge in mercy,

which is the supreme safeguard when a sinner is terrified.

Terrors have surged in from every side,

and time's calamities have come in succession, massing together.

And the herald of good departed with goodness, turning away,

and the warner of evil arose, cawing evil tidings.

And a father of sons among us came, bidding farewell

to his sons, fearing death while tears were shed.

They wept at the songs of farewell, not knowing

whether their father was in earnest or singing merrily in play.

And many a terrified woman, shaken by what befell her, did not know

whether the father would perish or live on for his children.

The two spend the night in thrall to sleeplessness, worn by separation,

yet he is wearier still from what has befallen Egypt.

He fears for her the evil of a people grown tiger-fierce,

intent on harming her when they sprang to attack.

They roam the land's far reaches, caring for nothing

but game to be shot at and prey to be sought.

A people seeking an aim have hurled them against us,

and the duped traitor has a purpose in evil.

They fear the day of justice, and justice is approaching

with its days, and time is ever fickle toward mankind.

So that day will inevitably come,

even if their minds have grown foolish and so they doubt.
