Hold back, O tyrant in our midst!
Slow down, you tyrant, do not scorn us
For good sense is not to despise us.
For it is not wise to belittle us
رُوَيدَكَrestrain yourself أَيُّهاO you القاضيthe judge عَلَيناagainst us

Hold back, O you who pass judgment on us,
Slow down, you unjust judge over us
with the judgment of resentful oppressors.
Judging like the hostile, vengeful ones
زَعَمتَyou claimed الحُكمَthe judgment حُكمَكَyour judgment فيin كِتابٍa book

كَذَبتَyou lied to بِهِthrough it الخَلائِقَmankind أَجمَعيناall of them
You claimed, in a book, that judgment was yours;
You claimed your rule was just, in a book
through it you lied to all mankind.
With which you deceived all people

Nor were they heedless of the hatreds seething
They were not unaware of the grudges boiling
in their cauldrons; nor were they ignorant of the certain truth.
Inside you, nor were they oblivious of the truth
نَفَثتَyou spewed سُمومَهاtheir poisons إِذwhen ضاقَbecame too narrow عَنهاfor them

You spewed their poisons when they overwhelmed
You spewed out their poisons when your heart
your heart—and hearts sometimes go astray.
Could not contain them, while hearts lose their way

مَهاذيرَbabblers المَقاوِلِthe utterances كاذِبيناliars
You claimed our leaders and men of sound judgment were
You claimed our elites and protectors
babblers in their speech and liars.
Were just prattling embellishers

Whenever you come to them, they please you with praise;
When they come to you, they please you with praises
but if you leave, they turn again to cursing.
But when they leave, they curse you

You claimed their homeland meant little to them,
You claimed their countries are worthless to them
so they do not complain of the usurpers' rule.
So they do not complain of the usurpers' pledge
زَعَمتَyou claimed حَياتَهُمtheir life أَرضاًland وَماءًand water
تَجودُgive generously بِهِwith it أَكُفُّthe hands of المانِحيناthe benefactors
You claimed their life was land and water
You claimed their lives are but land and water
generously bestowed by benefactors' hands.
Bestowed by the most generous palms

You made false assertions about us,
You made false claims about us
yet the words of those who make claims avail nothing.
And the words of the pretentious do not benefit
زَعَمتَyou claimed الدينَreligion وَالقُرآنَand the Quran جاءاboth came

You claimed religion and the Quran had come
You claimed religion and Qur’an came
with what makes Muslims' lives wretched.
To make the lives of Muslims miserable
زَعَمتَyou claimed مُحَمَّداًMuhammad لَمnot يُؤتَwas granted رُشداًright guidance

You claimed Muhammad had not been granted right guidance
You claimed that Muhammad was not guided
and had not followed the path of reformers.
Nor took the path of the reformers
فَلَيتَكَso, if only you كُنتَهُyou had been him لِتَسُنَّso that you might enact شَرعاًa law

Then would that you had been he, to enact a law
If only you followed him to enact a law
that would bring us to the station of the foremost!
That takes us to the place of the foremost
رُوَيدَكَrestrain yourself أَيُّهاO you الجَبّارُthe tyrant فيناamong us

Hold back, O tyrant in our midst!
Slow down, you tyrant, do not scorn us
For wretched is the judgment of the unjust.
For the rule of the unjust is miserable

And suppose us a nation drowned in ignorance,
You left us a nation drowning in ignorance
and a people buried in its humiliation:
And a people buried in their humiliation

does God's religion command us to be ignorant
God's religion, you claimed, orders ignorance
and require that we be abased and submit?
And obligates us to disgrace and submission

Ask the living and the dead alike:
Ask the living and the dead together
were we a nation treated as weak
Were we a subjugated nation?

Nights make Islam rise in us
resolves that subdued the arrogant?
With resolves that subjugate the arrogant

We toppled the thrones of mighty tyrants
We destroy the thrones of tyrants by force
and uprooted kingdoms as conquerors.
And uproot the conquering kingdoms

Battles at which states tremble,
Events from which states tremble
and the Caesars recall them in humiliation.
And emperors are humbled remembering them

We left Time shuddering violently,
We left time crumbling away crumbling
and left mankind dumbfounded,
And creation oblivious of us

With irresistible might and knowledge
that dispelled engulfing confusion and swept away the darkness,
Sweeping the depths and overflowing them

in the nights when ignorance overshadowed the peoples,
Nights ignorance shadowed people
leading them astray, so they remained bewildered.
Misguiding them to wander astray

We laid down right guidance for all who strayed;
We guided the misguided with righteousness
and but for religion, we would not have been rightly guided.
And without religion we would not be guided

And but for a group among us who forsook it,
If not for a group who abandoned it
we would have been the foremost, the very first.
We would be the earliest of the foremost

Do you claim that what the ignorant have perpetrated is religion,
Do you claim what the ignorant reaped is religion?
and hold us accountable for the sin of the ignorant?
And blame us for the sins of the ignorant?

Slow down, you tyrant, do not scorn us
For you have not been fair to us in worldly affairs or religion.
You did not treat us justly in life or religion
